How long does it take for a cat's viral infection to clear up?

Respiratory infections in cats are commonly viral, which means that they have to run their course. Antibiotics can help prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections, but they do not do anything to help with the virus. Supportive care is needed during these times to help Chesney feel better. Consider taking her into a steamy bathroom a few times a day for humidification. Suction her nostrils with a baby bulb syringe if they are really stuffed up. If she isn't eating well consider warming up her food so that she can smell it a little bit easier. Sometimes cats need subcutaneous fluids or IV fluids from the veterinarian to stay well hydrated the first several days of an upper respiratory infection. You may want to consider taking her temperature. Normal for a cat is 100-102. If she is 103 or higher I would encourage you to call your veterinarian to discuss medictions to help with the fever. Hello. This really depends on if this is bacterial, fungal or viral. Is she on any antibiotics? Is she FeLV & FIV negative. A simple bacterial respiratory infection can take 7-10 days to clear, a viral infection 10-21 days & a fungal cause can be fatal, so much depends on cause & what treatments she is on. Many times these infections are viral in nature and some can take several weeks before they finally go away. The big things would be to make sure Oreo eats a good diet like Royal Canin. This way you know you are getting good nutrition to support a healthy body. There's a supplement for cats called Lysine which can also help. Lastly, make sure Oreo is negative for immune suppressing viruses such as Felv and FIV. I hope this helps.

Feline herpes virus is something we see quite common in cats so this may be what he has. Lysine supplementation typically helps shorten the duration of the viral infection and severity. In an uncomplicated case of feline herpes, cats will mount and immune response to it so the infection is minimal if it even occurs again. Their vaccines also protect them against it also. Cats with severe cases and poor immune can be chronically infected. Even though yours is not symptomatic with it anymore and has a good immune system, they are a carrier for life. They do make anti viral such as Lysine treats to help with viral infections such as this

It's probably not a "cold". It is most likely herpes virus. If it is herpes virus, it will never go completely away. They will have recurring episodes. All you can do to minimize future episodes it is to reduce stress. You can try some Feliway diffusers, they may help. You can continue with the lysine but it has not really shown to be that effective in studies. There is another immune booster you can try though that seems to work pretty well. The link is below.
