Is my cat stressed or anxious about being rehomed to a new home?

Moving can be a stressful time for both cats and people. Some cats begin to experience stress when the first box is packed. Try to keep this time as normal as possible for your cat by continuing a normal daily routine and avoid packing your cat’s bed, cat tree, and toys until the last minute. Calming pheromone products, such as the Comfort Zone® Calming Diffuser or Comfort Zone® Spray and Scratch Control Spray, may minimize some of this stress. When moving day arrives, be sure that your cat is safely secured in a cat carrier before the door opens and boxes start leaving. We recommend plugging in the Comfort Zone® Calming Diffuser into your old home during packing, as well as in your new home during unpacking and the settling period. If possible, try to move your cat as early in the day as possible and confine them to a bathroom in your new home with their normal bed, litter box, bowls, and toys. This will keep your cat from escaping during the move and may pose less stress if they see less of the action. If your cat is prone to high stress, resulting in self-trauma with overgrooming or inappropriate eliminations, it may be best to discuss short-term anti-anxiety medication with your veterinarian.

You can give her more playtime with you, use a feliway pheromone diffuser to help her relax and make sure she has a quiet spot to get away from any noisy activity. If she's still not coming around then getting a young kitten may be good. She should enjoy a baby kitten but I wouldn't get a teenage or older cat as it may make her more anxious and then you have two to worry about. Try to replicate their home environment: same food, waterm litter boxes, etc. Feline pheromones, like Feliway, may be useful for anxiety. But really, just gett them into the new home and seeing what happens. You can always message us with any issues that arise so we can troubleshoot!

There maybe something about your new duplex that is causing stress" the smell, the sounds, the size? I would try to enrich her environment: play with her, get cat trees for her to climb, get beds she can hide in, get shelves you can put at a window so she can watch the birds (get a bird feeder) and I would consider getting the Feliway diffuser to help calm her. Ultimately if time and the above do not help her settle in, you may need to discuss anti-anxiety medications with your Vet. Which I would anticipate would be temporary. Congrats on your new kitty. She does sounds a bit stressed, and moving into a new home is stressful. It's good that she is eating the food Pea got at the shelter, and the vomiting could have been caused by a change in diet if you were feeding her something different before. If she's not eating a lot, then she won't be pooping a lot. Reading your post, there aren't any huge concerns, so I'd just keep an eye on her for now. Eventually have her seen by a vet for a health check, even if everything is ok. I hope this helps!

You may be surprised at how well he will take the move. If he becomes car sick, you may want to discuss anti-nausea medications with your vet that will ease this stress.
