My cat strains to poop and has a sore bum. What home remedies?

The red ring may be a potential rectal prolapse from all the straining. Add water to the meals to increase fluid intake. Too much pumpkin may worsen constipation. Add no more than 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds body weight of plain canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) to the meals. Ideally, Olivia should be examined by your veterinarian. Abdominal x-rays should be done to determine if she is obstipated (obstructed with stool). If so, she may need sedation and manual emptying and or enemas. Do not administer an enema at home.

Neosporin is safe to apply. The increase in fluid intake should help within 24 hours. If she is still straining or having bleeding after that, she may need to be evaluated by a vet to see if she needs IV fluids or an enema to break up the hard stools so she can pass them easily.

That dark discoloration implies that top skin no longer has blood supply and it is not healthy tissue. This is likely an abscess from an injury or previous bite wound. Typically they can heal on their own, but the bacteria get trapped and cause this. She will need to see a vet for further treatment as that spot may have to be surgically removed and the area cleaned and flushed out. Antibiotics need to be given to maintain control of the infection so it can heal. These areas are very painful so any touching or straining is not recommend.

I can't tell exactly what is goin on from the picture. If the rectum is actually prolapsed (like a little tube sticking out) then Blaze really needs medical attention. If it is just swollen and irritated, then the best you can do is to keep it clean with a wet wash cloth. This problem is often associated with diarrhea. The straining during diarrhea can push the colon out, and it will not heal normally without curing the diarrhea. If the prolapse does not resolve on its own, the pet may need surgery. Common causes for diarrhea in a kitten include food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, among a few others. I would wash it gently with a mild soap and rinse very well. If you have any a and d ointment or other diaper rash cream available then a very small amount of that applied and rubbed in well is appropriate. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This happens commonly. I would add 1 tsp benefiber to the food twice daily to help with that. Try a little diaper cream around the anus to help soothe the irritated area. If he is licking excessively, I recommend an E-collar. It’s usually only necessary for about 24 hours in cases like this. Poor Nugget probably has a sore and inflamed little anus from her issues last week. If she's had any issues with diarrhea or straining in the litterbox, then she may need to see a vet for the proper diagnosis and medication. She could need a food change, or probiotics added to her diet, or just simply to be dewormed. Hope that helps!
