My cat is sputtering, like a cough and sneeze. Is it a reverse sneeze?

A reverse sneeze can be caused by irritants in the upper airway region so if there has been an increased amount of dust in the air this could potentially be causing the symptoms you are seeing. An environmental allergy or an upper respiratory infection could also lead to these symptoms. A reverse sneeze should resolve within a short amount of time. However, if it persist or worsens, I would have a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I do recommend that you have Keela evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to evaluate her and treat her accordingly. This is likely going to warrant chest x-rays as far as diagnostics go. Best of luck!

It may be due to allergies or she may have developed an upper respiratory infection which can take up to 2 weeks to fully resolve. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sugar is super cute! It sounds like Sugar may be reverse sneezing. It sounds like a sucking in sneeze through the nose where they tend to hold their mouth open and grimace. I recommend searching YouTube for videos and see if that is what she is doing. It is common in some breeds (beagles). Some causes are allergies, inhaled some dust particles, foreign material stuck up the nose or above the soft palpate. If the episodes continue video tape it and take her to the Vet for an exam. I hope this helps and I wish you and Sugar the best!

However, thankfully this usually is benign and rarely becomes anything concerning. Most dogs just have reverse sneezing episodes every once in a while without causing any issues. If this ever seems to affect Diva in any way or if these episodes become too frequent, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment to make sure that this is not anything else more concerning. If there is no nasal discharge or other signs of illness associated with the sneezing I wouldn't be concerned. Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My guess is that Buddy was reverse sneezing. You can look at some YouTube videos ("reverse sneezing dogs") to see if Buddy's symptoms are similar. Look at a few different videos. If you think this is what he was doing, it is no big deal. The cold air probably just irritated his nasal passages. There is no treatment for reverse sneezing; it is not a problem/issue and it is not life-threatening. Reverse sneezing is very common. If it was not reverse sneezing, then I would suggest you just monitor him and if the behavior recurs then you should take Buddy to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
