Adopted cat sick after vaccine: is it stress or vaccine reaction?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lily! Lily is likely having a reaction to the vaccines. If she has a fever she needs to see a veterinarian. When animals have fevers they do not want to eat. Your Vet, after their exam, will likely give her subcutaneous fluids and steroids. Once the fever and the reaction has subsided Lily will likely eat. There is nothing to do at home besides wait out the fever and that may take to long. Cats can not go more than 3 days with out eating or they get sicker. Typical vaccine reaction is a slight temperature, soreness, vomiting and very lethargic. It sounds like Minnie might of had a mild vaccine reactions if he symptoms started right after the vaccine. However if she was vaccinated days before this started it is unlikely they are related. I would recommend taking her back to the vet for a good exam to make sure she does not have something more serious going on like a virus or infection. She might need some medications to help resolve her issues. hope that helps

I am so sorry that your cat Milo is ill following vaccines. These are classic signs for a vaccine reaction, and therefore I recommend having him seen by your vet right away. If you vet is currently not open, then I would consider taking him to your ER vet to make sure he is stable and ok. He will likely get medications (antihistamine +/- steroids) to help combat the reaction. I do hope that your pet Milo is able to make a full and speedy recovery. I would notify your vet about this as soon as you can so that precautions can be taken next year when he is due for his vaccine boosters to help prevent this from happening again. This should subside within 1-2 days. The vomiting could certainly be due to other reasons like gastroenteritis. If it does not improve or it worsens, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, him will likely start feeling better shortly. Good luck and best wishes!

Vomiting repeatedly in a cat can be a sign of gastritis (he ate something that upset his stomach), a blockage in the GI tract, a toxin, or other diseases of the body including kidneys/liver/diabetes, etc. If Oliver is playing, acting normally and is eating and drinking, I would recommend just feeding him boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breasts and boiled rice in small frequent meals for a few days. If he is eating/pooping normally and the vomiting resolves, it was likely a mild gastritis. If Oliver is weak/tired, not eating, or the vomiting gets worse at all, he needs to go to a vet right away for x-rays to make sure he doesn't have a blockage or a severe gastritis/pancreatitis. If there is a blockage he will die without surgery, so if the vomiting continues get him to a vet right away. Best of luck with Oliver.

It sounds like Samson has an upper respiratory virus that he was incubating, & the stress of moving into a new home with unfamiliar sights, sounds & people has impacted his immune system resulting in clinical signs. I cannot say if this is a watch & see situation. Often the symptoms of a mild upper respiratory infection will go away in a few weeks. But if he is not eating nor acting well, he may need medications to get over this. If you are concerned, it is always best to have Samson evaluated before he gets into a more difficult situation.
