Why is my cat running around the house like crazy before pooping?

If she is experiencing a lot of pain than she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She may be just having some constipation issues but a vet could check to make sure she doesn't have a congenital malformation and/or problems with her hips or pelvis. If it is just constipation than you could add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to her diet to increase the fiber and see if that helps.

Sometimes even a simple diet switch from one food to another is enough to cause intestinal inflammation or bacterial imbalance and diarrhea in cats. Though his risk is low, it's also possible he could have an intestinal parasite (cannot be ruled out without a fecal test). You can try adding one tbsp of canned pumpkin to his diet for fiber. If he does not improve soon, it would be best to take him to a vet. Sometimes a short course of medication is necessary to resolve this type of diarrhea.

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. She is likely experiencing dietary indiscretion from eating the treats. You can stop giving the treats to see if her runny stools improve. If these continue, I recommend that you have Dubh evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Usually a probiotic would help diarrhea, however some probiotics and digestive enzyme supplements are more like treats with a lot of other ingredients that might cause stomach upset. As long as Kitty is eating and drinking normally with no vomiting I think it’s okay to wait 1-2 days for it to resolve. If the diarrhea is very frequent or watery or has blood present you should see your vet right away. It should be fine to try pumpkin now, but sometimes excess fiber makes diarrhea worse so I would stop after two tries if you don’t see improvement. And even though it isn’t pleasant to think about, cats lick their own feces all the time when they’re grooming. Nothing to worry about!

Issues with faeces such as these can be indicative of issues in the gut. It could just be inflammation such as gastroenteritis or colitis, but sometimes it can indicate problems such as inflammatory bowel disease or tumours etc. You could try adding a probiotic to both of their feed and see if that helps, but I think it would be worth taking them both to the vet for an exam if it continues for more than a day or so.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While adding fiber to the diet can firm up the stool, I do not recommend feeding dry bran to your cat as it can cause constipation. Daisy may be having runny stool due to parasites or inappropriate diet (too many treats, human food, etc) or because she only eats soft food. Because she is a little older, I recommend having her seen by a vet to rule out intestinal inflammation, cancer, and maldigestion. Sometimes changing the diet helps or adding more fiber to the diet as well can help firm up the stool if there are no underlying causes of soft stool such as an infectious cause like parasites. You can try and add a tablespoon of regular canned pumpkin puree (not the pie filling) to her food to see if that helps firm it up. I would also recommend a fecal test with her veterinarian.
