Can I get ringworm from my pet while bathing them for ringworm?

Also be sure to discuss with your pediatrician other causes of ring worm in people. Ring worm in Veterinary medicine is diagnosed from a fungal culture and treated with antifungal oral pills (itraconazole, terbinafine, etc) and lyme sulfur dips. It is not fun. While ringworm is potentially contagious to people, the reality is that by the time your cat is diagnosed with ringworm, you have already been exposed to it for a long period of time and have not had any problems with it. Most people do not contact ringworm from cats (or other animals), but from other people. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, cats can be carriers of fleas, lice and ring worm. Cats can not have any skin lesions and carry ring worm. People can be allergic to cats as well. If Curly is being treated for ring worm then you can get it. If her hair is growing back that doesn't mean she is cured. I would ask your human Dr to provide a diagnosis. Not all skin conditions human develop can be blamed on animals. I hope this helps and I wish you and Curly the best!

Great question! Ringworm is highly contagious. I would recommend using gloves when handling him and washing your hands well after. I would also recommend long sleeves and washing your clothes after handling him. With good hygiene you should be ok but I would take all precautions. Ringworm is highly contagious to Guinea Pigs and seems to be able to spread easily with minimal contact, but strict hygiene is effective for preventing transmission. Considering that Sebastian did not have direct contact with the ringworm lesion, and you recently washed your hands, the risk of spreading this to him is very low. You can't get ringworm if your dog licks you, but you can get it from touching the sores and from the environment. Ringworm spores can last up to 18 months in the house, and you need to disinfect your home. I will put a link to a website that will give you detailed instructions on how to do it. Athlete's foot cream will not cure ringworm in dogs, and both your dogs have to see a vet first thing Monday. Ringworm in dogs is caused by Microsporum canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, or Microsporum gypseum, while athlete's foot is caused by trichophyton rubrum. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a skin infection. Although in theory possible, ringworm seems unlikely. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!
