My cat's bum looks red and raw. What's that red thing I'm seeing?

Yes, the redness could be due to irritation, and from your picture (thank you for providing one!) it doesn't look excessively red . It looks like normal mucosa to me (the membrane that lines the anal cavity), and I would not be concerned about it :-)

The pictures are not clear but this must be checked by a vet urgently. I would be concerned that this is a prolapse (when internal organs poke out) and surgical repair may be required, urgent assessment is vital as damage and trauma can occur

Hello there. Yes, this warrants having a vet take a look. It's difficult to tell for sure from the photos, but it looks like there may be a little mass there that has become irritated and bleeding. If so, it may be a benign process, but it warrants having a vet take a look in case it's something more concerning. Since it sounds like Gibbs is pretty comfortable, this is not an emergency, but I would call and get Gibbs scheduled for their next available opening. Hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Maty. Sometimes anal gland material and can dry up and be present near the gland opening at the anus. The red spot in your final picture appears to be separate from the anus though. In this case, an anal gland abscess or infection could be the cause. This is a painful condition and can cause difficulty defecating. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian to determine if treatment is necessary. I hope this information helps!

Hello! That bump looks a little swollen and red, and it could simply be a wound. I would clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap, and keep an eye on it. If the swelling gets larger, Chiky starts having trouble passing feces, she starts scooting on her behind, licking the area a lot, and/or you see pus, then I would take her into the vet. In that case, I would be concerned that the wound may be infected, or it could be something else causing the swelling such as infected and impacted anal sacs or intestinal worms. If you are seeing diarrhea, worms, a rash, etc. I would recommend having this looked at by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.

It looks like Coco may have a small amount of rectal tissue prolapsed. This can occur if they have parasites, chronic diarrhea, foreign body or constipation. I recommend having her checked for intestinal parasites and possibly adding water to her food to help her pass stool more easily. If she is vomiting or showing any other signs of illness she should see a pet ASAP.
