My cat had a pregnant spay. Is vulva discharge normal or concerning?

It can be normal for vaginal discharge after a pyometra surgery. The uterus is removed above the cervix. If blood and infection is present in the vaginal cavity it will still be present and leak out the vulva . If it is a small amount and Lucy is recovering normal I would not be concerned. If she is not eating, being overly painful or large amount of discharge I would recommend having her re checked by your vet.

Hi ! If Holly is well in herself, eating bright passing normal feaces and urine, I would not worry. A little bit of vaginal discharge is expected folllowing the surgery and should gradually decrease and disappear. It can take sometimes a couple of weeks for it to settle completely. Hello, mild discharge during gestation is normal. As long as Shadow is otherwise eating, drinking, defecating, and urinating normally and she seems otherwise like her normal self, then I would continue to monitor her. If you ever see larger volumes of discharge or bleeding then I would definitely have Shadow evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps

I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. A urine sample will likely be collected and evaluated under the microscope. If an infection is suspected, a urine culture may be recommended. That could be completely normal as some of the birth remnants could be still inside. If the discharge persists more than 48hours and you notice systemic signs like lethargy or inappetence, a check up is needed. That could definitely be mucous plug. It’s certainly not enough or abnormal enough for me to be panicking about anything serious. Leave her to her quiet area tonight and check on her every hours or two. If you do see larger amounts of fluid, dark discharge, foul-smelling discharge, or have other concerns, see a vet right away. Cats don't normally have discharge even when they are in heat. I would be concerned about a condition called pyometra. This is a major infection in the uterus and requires a spay procedure to remove the infected uterus. I would recommend taking her back to the vet for evaluation. It may be necessary to do blood work and abdominal x-rays to diagnose if she has a pyometra. That may be the source of the unknown infection for which she was recently treated.
