My cat was hospitalized for 6 nights. What's next for his care?

I'm sorry to hear that Tobi is sick! It would be helpful to know what specific tests have been done at his vet visits, what the results were, and what medications he's currently taking in order to give any thoughts on what steps might be recommended from here. I would suggest general blood work (a CBC and chemistry panel) as well as chest x-rays as a starting point, if these things haven't been done already. It does sound like his current treatment plan isn't working, so without more information, the best advice I can give is to take him back to your veterinarian for a recheck to see what they suggest as the next step. If he/she isn't sure what else to do, then I would request referral to an internal medicine specialist for further evaluation.

Please, check the leg she had the catheter in from the shaved area up to the shoulder. Sometimes after having the catheter in the leg becomes very painful or swollen. Some cats get upset once they have been in the hospital and they need some time at home to get back to normal. Please, keep an eye on Nemo at home, she should fully recover within 12-24hrs . If she is not acting as normal by tomorrow, you should take her back to your vets.

Poor guy. Unfortuantely we can't predict survival or give a prognosis without seeing any labwork or examining the pet. However, you are doing the right thing by keeping Mishka hospitalized until he starts to eat on his own on a regular basis. This is a good indicator that he is improving with his condition, especially if his labwork is improving as well. Most pets with a urinary obstruction only have to be hospitalized for 2-5 daysd in uncomplicated cases. However, eating is a crucial part in this. Cats that don't eat can get other complications like hepatic lipidosis; therefore, eating from here moving forward is key. : ) In rare cases, a feeding tube needs to be put in if the pet continues to not eat well, but again this is not very common. Also Mishka should be on a medication to help relax his urinary sphincter. Ask your vet about this. It also may be a good time to remove the urinary catheter and see how he does. Discuss these concerns with your vet and hopefully you'll can come together with a good treatment plan moving forward. Poor kitty! Your pet sounds like he needs to be hospitalized and properly diagnosed to find out the underlying cause of his illness. They will likely need to run some tests (bloodwork, x-rays, etc) in order to diagnose what's wrong. Whether that be an internal musculoskeletal injury, heart condition, stroke, etc. I am not sure what injections your pet was given, but it definitely doesn't seem like it is enough treatment for your very ill pet. He is in critical condition so I would advise to making him in right away! Best of luck with your kitty.

I hate to hear that Timmay is not feeling like himself. I would recommend to get Timmay seen by his veterinarian today if possible given that he has been lethargic for a week. They will check his temperature and give him a physical exam. Lethargy can be due to fever, organ dysfunction, anemia, heart disease, infection as well as other causes. That scab on his face could be a few things. An abscess could present like this and it could be superficial or related to a tooth root abscess. Superficial bacterial infections, thyroid problems or allergies could also look this way. The vet will try to figure out the cause and will prescribe appropriate medications. Given that Timmay is 18 years old, the vet may recommend bloodwork to check his enzyme levels and bone marrow function. Older cats are more prone to kidney disease as well as other problems with organ dysfunction. You will want to keep the area protected with an elizabethan collar so that Timmay cannot further cause damage it. I'm so sorry that Thomas isn't doing well. I can't tell what's going on from your description, but generally when the cause of an illness is not obvious from a physical exam, we do have to keep running tests until we find a cause OR try possible treatments until something works. When we're treating blindly, we run the risk of making something worse. Since it's getting worse, I think another vet visit is in order and you can work out a treatment plan that fits within your budget. Wishing you and Thomas the best of luck.

I am sorry for the delay in answering your question... I hope that Iomy is feeling better! Based on his xray, it does appear that his liver may be a bit enlarged. If he is still showing symptoms of illness, ask your family veterinarian about an abdominal ultrasound. This may help clarify what the problem is and what your options are. Also, if blood tests haven't been done that would also be helpful.
