My cat has dried discharge on her paw. Is it an infection or wound?

The paw will be cleaned with a disinfecting solution to evaluate the pad under the scab. If a wound is present, antibiotics may be necessary. I hope this information helps!

Poor kitty. Unfortunately the photo is too dark to really get a good look at the paw. I do see some crusting there though, which leads me to think this is just an infection and not likely skin cancer. Feel free to repost another photo with a second forum question, with better lighting to verify. If it is just infection, then you can try soaking the paw in Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water or Chlorhexidine solution 3% diluted into a light blue mixture to help clean this antiseptically. Then a vet visit will be needed to get Cream on some antibiotics (oral or injectable). I hope that Cream's foot heals well soon! Best wishes and take are.

Oh goodness, that looks like a deep infection. It could be bacterial or fungal, but I suspect more likely bacterial. He needs to see a veterinarian for an examination and treatment plan. However, in the meantime if he will allow you to soak his foot in warm water and Epsom salts that may be soothing and beneficial. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Poor Rain! That's a very tough spot for the body to heal itself because it doesn't have great blood supply and it's easy for pets to get to and lick, which is really bad for healing. It's a little hard to see how moist or dry the wound is from the pictures. It looks like it was very wet last night, and is a bit drier today. It actually looks pretty good to me, especially if this only happened a few days ago. So, I would be comfortable waiting until tomorrow, UNLESS you're seeing increased discharge or if Rain is lethargic/not eating/seems very painful. I'd recommend she have a soft sided cone on if possible to try to prevent licking, along with close supervision because cats are great at getting around the cones - pet stores often sell these. A hard sided one might work better, but could also be used to rub against the wound, so I would definitely use that if your vet gave you one or recommends it, but wouldn't advise it without seeing her in person to see how she's moving around and how comfortable she is. I am so very sorry to hear about your kitty! It does appear, unfortunately, that your kitty could have an infection going on in the foot here, as the area looks swollen with purulent discharge coming from the area. Unfortunately when we have an area like this, a topical treatment is usually not going to suffice and oral or injectable antibiotics is often needed. We can see infections as a result of overgrown or ingrown toenails, wounds, foreign bodies (like a piece of splinter or grass seed) entering the skin, and sometimes we can also get fungal infections. Without seeing your kitty in person it is very hard to determine. I know you say you cannot afford a vet, but I think you will have to figure out a way to get your kitty in to see the vet. They can look more closely at the toe and the nail to try to determine the cause. They may be able to do this just by looking and feeling the area, they may want to test the discharge to check for bacteria or fungus They may need to flush the wound to be sure there isn't any object lodged there. I would recommend calling the vet's office and letting them know your situation. They may have a program called Care Credit that you can apply for to help pay your vet bills with monthly payments, or they may have another program set up similar to this. If they do not, they may be able to refer you to a low cost clinic in your area. Some Humane Society's or animal shelters have lower cost services for those in need. It is best to let your vet know up front of your financial situation so that they can choose the most stream-lined and cost effective options for you from the start.

It is not uncommon to see skin infection or small abscesses in this area in dogs. 2. The best way to go will be cleaning the paw twice a day with iodine solution. Also, you need to clean it after each walk (could be just with water) You need to dry the paw after each cleaning with a towel. You should make sure that your Simba is not licking the paw, you may have to use a head collar. Apple cider vinegar is not going to help, there is no need to use it. 3. If this treatment is not effective and there is no improvement within 48hrs, you should take Simba to your local vets. Good luck.

You can try disinfection with different solution like hibiscrub or betadine ones. Unfortunately antibiotics seems to be needed, so I would recommend an immediate check up if disinfection is not working as infection could be a major risk. A picture of the lesion could help to determine underlying cause more specifically.
