My cat has been on Hills r/d for two years. Is it safe long-term?

I would recommend a prescription weight loss diet. Those are high in fiber and have a lot more fiber than anything you can get over the counter. This will help him lose weight and with the constipation. If he continues being this overweight you are risking him getting diabetes which is very common in obese cats. Diabetes can be a true nightmare to manage. The diet I would say is the best for this issue is either going to be Hill's prescription w/d or Hill's prescription r/d. It's unusual for Hill's metabolic diet (the prescription version) to not work at the labeled feeding amounts. I would recommend that you discuss your concerns with your vet. They can consult with representatives from Hill's to determine a different feeding regiment. It's also important to point out that some stalled weight loss can be caused by inappropriate measuring tools, feeding treats, or having the pet get food from other pet food bowls. It definitely is a balanced diet that is safe for long-term use. It is most commonly used in dogs with skin issues or food allergies, so if this is a problem that Kira experiences, it would be a great choice. There are also lots of great foods that are available to you. I have fed my dog Purina Pro-Plan since she was a puppy. She is now 14 and has no health issues! I would discuss the best option with your vet.

Prescription diet A/D is high in calories so it may not be the most suitable diet for long term. You have to monitor Coco's weight to determine when this food needs to be discontinued. Also it isn't necessarily a puppy food, so it's best to go back to his normal large breed puppy diet primarily and then if you want to mix in just a few tablespoons of the A/D to keep him interested, that may be completely fine until he reaches sexual maturity and no longer has high calorie food demands, which is typically around 8-12 months of age in large breed dogs. I recommend changing his diet to a specialized weight management diet such as hills metabolic so he can feel full and receive all the necessary nutrition to be healthy, whilst still losing and then maintaining weight. Mist vets offices provide free weight clinics to monitor and advise on feeding such diets and maintaining health and fitness

Hill's (Science Diet) makes a prescription urinary s/d diet and a c/d diet. If it is SO, then it must a diet made by Royal Canin. Royal Canin S/O diet is OK to feed to all the cats as is Hill's c/d multicare diet. The s/d diet is probably OK if it is only going to be a short term diet.

Unfortunately, Fancy Feast has a higher amount of fat and salt in it, so it does cause cats to gain weight. I recommend feeding your other cats a dry kibble, there are light or diet options from Hill's available as well. Being overweight can cause diabetes and other medical conditions in cats, so it is definitely a good idea to have them lose their extra weight.
