My cat is hot, licking, has fleas, and bleeding warts. Is it serious?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 11 months old

Hello, since last night, my cat is hot to the touch (his body, ears and sometimes his nose too) ,he's acting and eating normally. He's not dewormed, and he has fleas. I noticed that he licks himself more than usual, he had 2 warts on his tail (for more than a year) but now they're bleeding and he licks them sometime, what can cause warts to bleed? can warts evolve into something more serious? And please what are the other symptoms I should look for? Thank you

Warts are most often benign but they can progress and start bleeding or become infected. It sounds like Patxi's warts have become inflamed to cause them to bleed. The fleas that Patxi has may have triggered this inflammation and bleeding as they will often cause a lot of irritation and cause cats to itch and overgroom themselves.

I suggest starting Patxi on a good quality flea preventative like Frontline Plus, Bravecto, or Revolution. It will take at least 4 months of consistent flea prevention to get rid of the flea issue.

If Patxi feels warm I'm concerned he may have a fever. This could be triggered by an infection. It would be a good idea to have him examined by a veterinarian to see if he needs antibiotics or other medications. During his exam the veterinarian can also evaluate his warts and see if they require any treatment.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Patxi is feeling better soon!
