My vet said to apply cat eye ointment to a closed eye. Is it true?

It's absolutely normal, keep doing the treatment as prescribed until the eyes improve. if you do not see enough improvement within a few days, take Bosco back to the vet in order to get them checked.

Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach. So sorry that Sid is having this issue. Chloramphenicol does come in a drop - we can get it here in the U.S. Maybe it is not available in the UK? I am unsure about this. The ointment is likely a better choice in this instance anyway as it lasts longer in the eye so you can apply it less frequently. If you get a drop you will need to put it in quite frequently (like every 2-4 hours) as it doesn't last long. As for the ointment just sitting on the eye, that is likely OK. Enough is probably getting where it needs to be. If he is having trouble blinking you may have to do it for him. I usually apply the ointment and then close the eyelids with my fingers and gently rub the upper eyelid to spread the ointment over the eyeball. I do this whether or not a tarrsorrhaphy (third eyelid flap) has been performed or not. I know this is not fun to do and cats are not usually the best patients. Just do the best you can. If he is trying to fight you, you may want to wrap him up in a heavy towel like a burrito with only his head sticking out. That may make it easier for you to medicate him. Hope this helps. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. For now, have Banny wear an elizabethan collar. Thats the best way to protect his eye. The I recommend to call his vet and ask about using the eye ointment. Some ointment has a steroid and this will cause significant damage if an ulcer is present on the cornea. The vet may recommend to examine Banny again if they are concerned that an ulcer may be present. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I would stop using the ointment and wash it out until you can talk to your vet. Was the cat squinting prior to you taking her to the vet? Was the medication prescribed for that brown spot? If you could post again with more information and photos of the medication you are using we may be able to help you better.

Eye lubricant helps only if your cat has dry eye (extremely rare) but if he has conjunctivitis, a little foreign body stuck under his eyelid, a corneal injury or ulcer it isn't indicated. If your cat keep the eye close or squint or has an eye discharge, I recommend to have him checked by your vet that will perform a full ophthalmologic examination.
