Why is my cat urinating so much, but blood work shows no diabetes?

If the veterinarian did not test her urine, I would recommend having her urine tested to see if she is dealing with a urinary tract infection. If she has a UTI, she will need an antibiotic and potentially an anti-inflammatory. If her urine was tested and came back normal, I would recommend providing her with multiple litter boxes with different litter and consider the use of a product called Feliway, which can be found online or at your local pet store. Possibilities to explain this finding include a urinary tract infection, urinary tract stones, inflammation of the urinary tract, among others. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If so, it can spread to the kidneys causing damage resulting in an elevated SDMA. She will also need x-rays of her abdomen to check for bladder stones. If these tests are negative, idiopathic cystitis is common in cats. It is inflammation in the bladder that can lead to blood in the urine. If her veterinarian is concerned with kidney disease, then her blood pressure should be measured. Diet recommendations will be based on her final diagnosis. I hope this information helps!

This sounds quite frustrating for everyone involved! At this point, the most common causes of Greyson's bloody urine (UTI, kidney infection, crystals in the urine and bladder stones) have all been excluded. The other possibilities include a sterile cystitis (non-infectious bladder inflammation), urethral spasms or a bladder tumor (unlikely given his young age). Consider discussing medications that could decrease spasms in the urethra or anti-inflammatory medications to decrease bladder inflammation with your vet. Also make sure that Greyson is drinking plenty of water (water fountains or mixing water with canned foods can be helpful) because many causes of bloody urine can also be precursors to urethral obstructions, which can be life threatening. Blood in the urine would not be caused by his insulin, so don't worry :) It's likely that he has a UTI, as these are extremely common in diabetic cats. If he's acting normal otherwise, I wouldn't consider this an emergency - but I would definitely recommend calling Meatball's regular vet in the morning or taking him in for an exam. You should continue on his regular insulin dosing schedule as directed by your veterinarian unless he/she instructs you differently.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Dixie. We could have numerous possible causes for her symptoms, some easily treatable and others more complicated. We could see these signs with a urinary tract infection, cystitis (inflammation of the bladder), bladder stones, tumors of the bladder, and kidney disease. We can also see increased thirst and urination with things like Diabetes and Hyperthyroidism. I would recommend getting Dixie in to the vet as soon as possible for an exam and blood and urine testing to help determine the cause of her issue and start treatment.

Increased thirst and urination can be commom symptoms of many disease processes and you are right that the first things we check for are metabolic (kidney disease, diabetes, etc.). The answer to your question is both. A urinalysis should always be performed as part of a blood panel, otherwise you are missing crucial information. Your vet will likely order a senior kitty wellness panel from an outside lab which will include cbc, chemistry panel, thyroid testing, and urinalysis.
