Why do cats eat less in summer and tip over their water bowls?

I'm sorry your kitty isn't eating as much right now. It could be because it's so hot in Australia that his appetite has decreased, or it could be that he has a dental problem or illness causing his decrease in appetite. It's always best to have a health check done by a vet when a cat stops eating as much, and I would have him seen by a vet either today or tomorrow. If there is a medical cause behind his lack of eating, the vet can treat him for it.

River could certainly be losing light in the summer from more exposure to parasites, more activity while hunting, and many pets actually do tend to eat less during the heat of the summer months. There are parasites that the cats can pick up from hunting and keeping them on a routine parasite prevention Such as revolution or Advntage multi would be a good idea. Most cats become very inactive during hard summer, it's absolutely normal, as long as he has a cool surface to lay on and plenty of shade he should be fine. if you have a fan at home it can help but not all cats tolerate fans.

The close up vision of cats is much weaker than their long distance vision and so, when they are right at their water dish, they can’t see the water level. In order to check where the water starts – or if there is even any water in the dish – they will move it to cause the water to ripple and splash. Once they are satisfied they know where the water is, then they will commence their drinking. That is my best guess. If you are not happy with this change in behavior you could always get her a drinking fountain to drink from. Most cats prefer to drink from running water so this may help. With that heat it is very important to have an area of shade for them to hide, as well as free access to cool water at all times. Ideally, have a sprinkler or some water source (kiddy pool filled with water) that they can go in to cool down. Dogs overheat very easily and can get very sick with overheating. Hello, sorry to hear about Masha. Cats may sometimes prefer stale water, not fresh water. However, deepening on what Masha's diet is, she may be obtaining her water intake from any canned food you may be feeding her. Cats typically do not drink too much as they tend to gain their water needs through their food. Monitor for any lethargy, decrease in appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, and have her evaluated if you note any. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It's possible they could be picky eaters, however a complete checkup with your vet is a good first step to make sure there aren't issues such as GI upset, allergies, parasites, illness, etc that could be causing them to not eat as much. If they check out healthy, removing all extra snacks and treats between meals and only offering their food may encourage them to eat. You can moisten the food or add in a little bland boiled chicken to make it more enticing as needed. Cats also tend to be drawn to things that are smelly, so warming up the food to make it smellier may encourage them to check it out as well.
