What's wrong with my cat's ear? What could be causing the issue?

We will be able to help give you an idea of how serious the problem is, but cannot diagnose his condition and will likely recommend he sees a vet to get an accurate diagnosis. I'm disappointed to hear the news about your current vet. It may be best to have him seen by another vet if you feel the allegations are credible and you do not trust them. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thank you for sending along pictures but they are a little hard to make out clearly. This could be an infection-bacterial or perhaps fungal. It could also be due to a flea allergy. I would recommend keeping Jorfy on a flea preventative monthly to rule out a flea allergy but also have him see his veterinarian. Your veterinarian may do a skin scraping and/or fungal culture to rule out bacterial infection or a fungal infection. He may need antibiotics, antifungal medications, or other medications as needed. Judging from the photos you have provided, I would suspect this to be a severe allergic reaction or something such as a cancerous skin condition of the ear pinna. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine this so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Judging from the picture you provided, I see black waxy material and also a tattoo that has been done on the inside of the pinna. The tattoo is likely to indicate that she has been spayed and it is in the pattern of a circle with a linear line through it. That is not a concern at all and will be permanent. The black wax may be due to ear mites or an ear infection though. As there is not species noted or age, this is quite difficult for me to assess with your description and photos. I will try to help as much as I can though. This looks like the inside of the ear under the ear flap. I cannot see the entrance to the ear canal and it looks quite swollen. I would strongly urge you to see your veterinarian to have this diagnosed and treated appropriately. When ear infections get this bad they can be quite difficult to treat. It may be a long road to treat this and get 100% resolution. Most likely this will require oral medications and topical ear medications. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Smokey. She will need to see her veterinarian as she appears to have an ear infection. The veterinarian will use an instrument called an otoscope to look deep within each ears canal. Redness, swelling and discharge are all signs of infection. Next, a sample will be collected from each ear and evaluated under the microscope. This will determine if the infection is bacterial, yeast, mites or some combination. This will allow the doctor to prescribe an appropriate medication and cleaning solution. I hope this information helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It’s hard to say but it looks like a tick is attached to his ear. I would recommend taking him to a vet to confirm and have them remove it. If it is, you have to make sure you remove the entire head and in that location it may be tricky. I don’t know about tick borne diseases in Ireland but in the US ticks can carry diseases that could cause problems in pets. The vet can discuss these further when they see Snowball.
