My cat has distemper. Is eating and drinking a good sign of recovery?

I'm sorry Gizmo has parvo! It is a good sign that he's eating, and hopefully he can start on puppy food again soon. Without seeing him in person, I can't say what his chances of survival are, but I can say things are looking good if he's eating and keeping it down. Parvo virus in cats (also known as panleukopenia) is a very serious illness with a poor prognosis. If Blue was not tested for feline panleukopenia and his diagnosis was an educated guess, it may be that the bloody stool and vomiting were caused by some other bacterial or viral infection, or intestinal parasites. I do hope that he continues to get better and go back to completely normal! A true panleukopenia virus infected cat can continue to shed virus particles for 6 weeks. I do recommend that he be seen by the vet to start vaccinations next week to prevent other viral infections that are prevented with proper vaccination. What you describe could be feline distemper. It could be feline infectious peritonitis (the dry form) or another viral infection. Whatever ever is is, Butternut needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Keep Buttermilk as comfortable as possible, leave plenty of fresh water available, offer canned food or even boiled chicken breast. Good luck.

It's definitely a good sign that she is drinking water. Even if they get adequate amounts of fluids IV, they can still feel parched and want to drink occasionally. This does not indicate that she is dehydrated and is good that she's helping to keep hydrated. The IV fluids, or other methods of hydration should still be given as directed by your vet though. There are two types of the feline corona virus: the enteric version and the mutated enteric version which causes FIP. A FIP diagnosis requires a blood test, clinical signs/symptoms and a history. If fluid is present in the abdomen, testing that fluids for the virus will indicate FIP. Just becomes Hadid has antibodies against the corona virus, does not mean he has FIP. All is means is he has been exposed to the virus and developed antibodies. Blood results together with Hadid's history will help determine diagnosis. It is great news Hadid is eating and has no fever. This is a good sign Hadid is heading the right direction. I hope this has helped!

It sounds like you are doing just fine with him. I really can't say if he is on the mend or not without examining him myself but he does not sound that sick so that is good. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is not uncommon for cats to have herpesvirus latent in their bodies that flares up every now and then. As long as they are continuing to act normal otherwise (eating/drinking/urinating/defecating normally), I would let the signs run their course. You do not need to disinfect your house. I would not be worried unless you start to see any other unusual signs such as hiding, not eating, or coughing. I hope this is helpful!
