My foster cat has cloudy eyes, white film, nosebleeds. What's wrong?

If he is all else is normal, you can try over the counter lysine- often sold at pharmacies and pet stores. It is an antiviral and can help for upper respiratory viruses. If this is a new finding and he seems not to feel well, it would be safer to take him in.... I would also take a warm washcloth and gently exfoliate his nose and continue to keep his eyes clean as you have. I hope this helps!

Sneezing and eye discharge make me suspicious of a viral infection, especially feline herpes virus. Herpes virus can cause a myriad of eye problems including ulcers, conjunctivitis, and keratitis. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon as you don’t want the problem to get worse. Excessive discharge and crusty nose as well may be due to an upper respiratory tract infection possibly due to a viral infection. These infections can be quite severe and cause superficial keratitis when they affect the cornea as well. That may be the reason for the cloudy appearance of the left eye. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. Unfortunately, the picture is not clear enough for me to fully see the lesion. However, a diagnosis would require a full ophthalmic exam by a vet, so we would only be able to give educated guesses anyways. Cats with feline herpes virus at a young age can get severe ulcers in the cornea (the outside layer of the eye ball). This, or swelling within the cornea are the common causes of the cloudy appearance. With severe ulcerations, the cornea does not heal perfectly and can have a permanent scar - this could definitely be a reason for the cloudy spot you are describing. However, I would have expected one of the previous vets to have diagnosed this already, so it may be something else. Considering you have been to many veterinarians already and have not received an adequate answer, or potential treatment options (corneal scars can be remedied with minor surgery), I recommend seeking a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist. They will be able to definitively diagnose the condition and will be the best professional to offer treatment. When a cat presents to us with unilateral or one-sided symptoms such as the one your cat is displaying, we start to think of specific types of causes. Some of the things that can cause nosebleeds and left-sided issues in general of the head could be things like sinus infections of that side, dental problems on that side, cancerous growth in the nasal passage or sinuses, etc. I urge you to go to a veterinarian as soon as possible to get a complete physical and dental examination performed. The veterinarian will also probably want to do some school x-rays as well as rhinoscopy to look up the nasal passage or otoscopy to look down the ear on that affected side. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Billy! I think the eye and the bloody stool are 2 separate things. The most common cause of increased blinking of the eye (from pain) is from herpes viral infections. Almost all cats have been exposed. They can either clear the virus, become chronically infected (chronic nasal discharge and congestion and/or chronic eye issues) or they become carriers and have eye or nasal flare ups with stress. Being a foster and going to a new home is stressful and likely is causing a flare up. We treat the eye with ointment antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections. The eye usually improves in a week or so. Possible causes of the bloody diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, pancreatitis, new environment (stress) or a food allergy or intolerance. I recommend having Billy evaluated by a Vet to have his eye treated and medications for his bloody stool. Bring a stool sample to have tested for parasites. You can also start a probiotic, I like Purina Fortiflora. I hope this helps and I wish Billy a speedy recovery!
