My cat has chronic URI, blood in urine. Is it time to let her go?

You could take your cat to an internal medicine veterinary specialist for an ultrasound and/or other diagnostics to help get a definitive diagnosis. A specialist has more training then a regular veterinarian so may be able to read the ultrasound better. If you can't do that then you could try the anti-inflammatory and see if that helps. Your vet can monitor kidney function while on the anti-inflammatory. Hope she gets better soon.

Have her seen by your veterinarian. You can request conservative treatment and your veterinarian may prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic for a presumed urinary tract infection without performing recommended diagnostics (urine culture, urinalysis, abdominal xrays, blood work). It may help, however the risk is that the bloody urine may not be caused by "simple" infection. Other possibilities are inflammation, tumor or stones. If Luna should become completely obstructed, this will turn into an emergency and potentially life threatening condition.

Straining to urinate, not producing urine or having blood tinged are typically signs of an emergency. She needs to be evaluated. Urine testing, blood work and x-rays of her bladder may be needed. Thanks for visiting Petcoach. Poor kitty. I have to agree here, that if there is still gross blood in the urine, then additional testing is needed. I would highly recommend starting with a radiograph to check for urinary stones. However, a more inclusive test that is more cost effective, would be to do an ultrasound. Yes an ultrasound is more expensive than a radiograph, but if you still dont find an answer with the radiograph, an ultrasound would be needed. The ultrasound can not only tell us if there are urinary bladder stones, but it can look at the urinary bladder in 2D to determine if there are any structural abnormalities or growths inside the bladder. It is the best way to go here, especially after trying to treat this medically twice now. To help with finances though, I would suggest trying out for CareCredit. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Julie! Blood in the urine can indicate a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine or bladder stones. She may not be eating because she is uncomfortable or has a fever. I recommend that Julie sees a Veterinarian. They may check her urine for infection or crystals. If she is older they may want to run blood work. They also may want to take an X-ray to check for a bladder stone. If it is a urinary tract infection she needs antibiotics. If it is crystals in the urine then we usually change the diet. If bladder stones, ideally surgery is recommended. I hope this helps and I wish Julie a speedy recovery!

It is common for cats to hide when they don't feel well. She needs to be taken to a vet to have the lethargy and bloody urine addressed. They will do blood work to check her kidneys function and a urine sample to check for an infection. Weight loss and dehydration can occur quickly in older cats. Your vet can better guide you in her quality of life based on the diagnostics.

Unfortunately you will not be able to just order an antibiotic online. This may not be a urinary tract infection and could be what we call a sterile cystitis. You could start by ensuring she is drinking plenty of water (recirculating water fountains help), switch to canned food and start a supplement called paxon or cranberry supplement treats for cats, which can be found online.
