My cat is on chemo; why are her stools loose? Is this normal for her?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to the medication that Minu was on though it is hard to know without knowing which medication she was on. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Minu evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Couple of concerns here. Were you given an option of referral to obtain a definitive diagnosis? Differentiation of these diseases requires biopsy. Did your pet have an ultrasound? Also having a chemotherapy medication made in to a liquid is a big safety concern unless a pet has a feeding tube. Were you counseled about safe drug and urine/fecal handling with this drug? Also has your kitty had blood monitoring with this drug for safety? There are typically some other things we do with cats with GI disease but this is case dependent. Also the dosing for chlorambucil is different for different cats. What would really be best, if you feel that you need more help beyond your vet, you could request referral to a specialist (either an internist or an oncologist). This is suspicious of chronic diarrhea, which is not specific to any one condition and would eventually require a vet evaluation and some testing in order to discover the cause of this. Antibiotics, diet change, and a new home causing stress can all cause loose stools, so it could be a combination of these things causing it, however I would schedule Gizmo's checkup anyway since that's always a good idea to do with any new pet, especially one that is already currently on medications. Your vet can rule out any other health issues, deworm in case of parasites, and help you get started on a vaccination plan or treatment plan for any other underlying issues.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would get a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. If the metronidazole isn't working I would ask for tylan and Hill's i/d to help control the diarrhea. The drug can cause GI upset seen as vomiting and diarrhea. You can discuss trying a lower dose with your Vet when they call you back. Lowering the dose will make it less effective against the lymphoma. I wish you the best!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Any medication can cause an upset tummy. Personally I haven't had a cat develop diarrhea from it. I wonder if Tony's loose stool and decrease appetite has more to do with the underling illness is causing the low potassium in the first place. I would call your Vet and tell them what is going on with Tony in case they want to modify the plan. I hope this helps!

I am very sorry to hear about Bella's diagnosis of cancer. Soft, bloody stool may be related to the medication she is receiving (if any), related directly to her cancer (not indicated what type of cancer she has), or it can be stress colitis (inflammation of the colon due to stress on her body). Regardless, it is best to ask your veterinarian for a prescription of medication for this problem. It is the quickest and safest way to help get this resolved for her.
