My cat is always calm and doesn't play. Is he unhappy or just relaxed?

Poor little Sooki! If she comes from abuse or neglect, it’s possible she has a certain level of fear or anxiety around humans. You’re doing the right thing by being patient with her. Continue to encourage her to come out of her shell. Keep the environment peaceful and quiet. Continue to try to entice her to play. Try different types of toys to see if you find anything she is interested in. Cats will eventually come around to trust their primary care taker. Using a pheromone diffuser can help her in general to combat anxiety. Providing many hiding places and areas where she can get up high can also help. Some cats are happy with companionship and aren't interested in play. I’ve had luck with using a laser pointer to see if he’ll chase it. You can also try putting treats on a cat tree to get him to climb up and be active. You can also train cats to come when called, beg, sit, shake etc just like a dog. This is done with treats and praise as rewards and takes lots of time. The training should be fun for you both and is good bonding and quality time together. He may just be a super lazy cat but I am surprised as a kitten that he isn't playing some. I would talk to your vet about running some additional diagnostics like a feline leukemia/aids test and blood work. I am worried there is something more going on and further tests need to be done to find this out. I hope this helps!

Hello. It is difficult to say if this is just normal behavior for Rocky, or he has some underlying issue. You do not say how long you have had him, but if he has been on his own for a while, he may just need to regain his strength & is enjoying the company & surroundings he has at this time. If this has been ongoing for awhile, then perhaps a deeper investigation is in order. Blood work, including thyroid levels & a FeLV/FIV test & urinalysis may point to some underlying issues. It is also pretty difficult to accurately determine the age of an adult cat, until they reach 13 or so. Rocky may be a little older than you think. It sounds like this is not an easy situation. Some cats will not like being kept inside while others adjust easily. You won't know until you try. There are some things you can do which can benefit any cat (a bored cat and a cat adjusting to a new life style). This all sounds like normal behavior for an older cat - as they become adults they are often less interested in playing and cuddling. I doubt a new kitten would make Sammy more likely to play or cuddle, and it can sometimes be difficult to introduce a new cat into the house depending on the personality of your cat. Sometimes it goes great and the old cat enjoys the new cats companionship and other times it can cause stress and make an anxious cat feel more anxious. I am worried that Cube might be sick. Kittens normally are quite playful, so a kitten who just eats and sleeps without periods of high energy play and curiosity is not normal. Please take him to the vet for an exam. The vet will probably recommend some blood tests, and may also recommend a stool sample. It could be that he was born with some sort of internal defect such as a heart malformation that makes him not able to have periods of sustained play. Please have him seen by a vet ASAP.
