What to do if my cat's nostril is blocked with brown discharge?

It's probably dried up mucous discharge which is typically caused by a runny nose. Monitor Luna for continued nasal discharge after initially wiping this away with a warm moist cloth. If she continues to have discharge and other signs of an upper respiratory infection (sneezing, congestion,or runny eyes)then it is best to have her evaluated by your vet and treated with oral antibiotics.

You could use a warm washcloth to get some of the mucous off of Cat's eye and hopefully allow it to open, but I wouldn't try too hard to open it. It is possible that she is holding it shut because it is painful as well. It sounds like she could have an upper respiratory infection, which is usually viral however if there is eye discharge she could have a secondary bacterial infection. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian so they can examine her eye and prescribe antibiotics or topical eye medication if necessary.

This one sided discharge in Molson could be due to cancer, fungal infections, foreign bodies, and oronasal fistulas that may affect a single nasal passage. It can also be a sign of a respiratory infection, but usually that is accompanied by additional signs such as sneezing. I would have him seen by a vet in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing the singular nasal discharge, and can treat him for it. Tonight, you can try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve his symptoms.

If your kitty has no problems breathing, and if the discharge stays clear, then you do not have to do anything. The next time she has that discharge, take her temperature and if it is 102F or higher you should monitor her for lethargy or not eating, as she may have a viral infection. If the discharge is purulent (yellow or green) she needs to be seen by a veterinarian.

Hello. This does sound like an upper respiratory infection. Most of these are viruses & run their course over several weeks. If Nancy is eating well, there is probably not much you need to do except keep her warm & feed her well. It is possible that she is suffering from an upper respiratory infection that may be viral and/or bacterial in origin. If you believe that she is not having difficulty breathing (ie, has a respiratory rate of less than 40 at rest and is not using her belly to help her breathe), she is eating normally, drinking, urinating and defecating normally, and has a normal energy level, you may be able to monitor her at home. Sometimes, keeping her in the bathroom while you run a hot shower can help clear her sinuses. If you notice any purulent (yellow, thick, foul-smelling) discharge from either her eyes or nose, I recommend having her seen by a veterinarian to be examined and treated. I hope this is helpful!
