My 4-month-old cat ate D-Con poison. What are his survival chances?

Decon is a highly toxic rat bait that cause death through the disruption of calcium and phosphorus ratio by absorption of vitamin D. Even very small quantities are toxic as only a .1mg/kg dose is known to start producing toxic effects. Also troubling is that clinical signs are sometimes not present for days after the ingestion. As a result, I would highly recommend bring Luna to your local ER for 24-48 hours of IV fluid therapy, Activated Charcoal, and generalized GI support. The use of charcoal in many toxic exposures is useful in up to and further than 24 hours in some cases. I would also encourage you to open up an active case to the ASPCA poison control hot line and provide the case number to your veterinarian should you go this route. It is about 65 dollar but gives you and your vet access to a board certified veterinary toxicologist. Hope this makes sense.

Bromethalin is a highly toxic substance for cats, symptoms include hyperexcitability, muscle tremors, grand mal seizures, hindlimb hyperreflexia, CNS depression, hyperthermia, and death. treatment is mainly symptomatic but cannot be done at home, only a vet can help your cat if symptoms occur (fluids, anti seizure medications, stomach lavage).

I am so sorry your little kitten isn't doing well! His chances of survival honestly depend on the cause of his symptoms and his response to treatment. It's good that he was eating well but it is concerning that he then went downhill again. You have done exactly the right thing by bringing him back to the vet, and he will be in the best care possible with vet giving him the greatest chance of survival. They can tell you whether you need to rush to the emergency vet or to not worry at all. There is a $59 fee but that is much cheaper than an emergency vet visit! If it is recent ingestion of a toxin or poison, you may have your veterinarian induce vomiting to prevent the side effects of this toxin. Because he is likely receiving fluids and medication to control the symptoms of the toxicity, Chewie has a better prognosis than if he were not receiving treatment. Your vet will likely continue monitoring Chewie for signs of worsening toxicity, and should communicate these to you.
