My pet's antibiotics ran out early. Do I have to pay for more?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | spayed | 3 lbs

I paid for a complete prescription of antibiotics that would last the full 10 days. Turns out that the dose will only make it up to 8 days. I call my vet and they say I have to pay an additional charge, what should I do? I have already paid for a full 10 days and they told me, "We make sure to add extra to make sure that this problem doesnt happen". This wasnt the case and I'm not okay with paying again. Please clear this up, thank you.

Unfortunately, you will have to resolve this with the veterinary clinic. It's possible some of the liquid evaporated. It's possible she was dosed an extra amount by accident. It's also possible the correct amount of liquid was not administered when the medication was reconstituted. It sounds like Hazel did take all the medication however (which is good).
I recommend to ask the veterinarian if the extra two days is very important or if a wait and see approach could be ok. You can always start another course of medication if needed. You may also ask about other therapies that could help keep Hazel healthy. We may be able to offer some assistance there is you would like to repost another question.
I hope this helps to provide some guidance and please feel free to post any additional questions.
