My 3-month-old kittens are active, but vomited once. Are they healthy?

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to say exactly without seeing the kittens first for an exam, but I can certainly offer some insights. If they have not been vaccinated, it may be something infectious such as pankleukopenia which is viral infection. Ingesting a toxin or a parasitic infection could also be possibilities. Vomiting all night for 6 week old kittens is a very serious concern as kittens that young are very susceptible to dehydration from the vomiting and that can sometimes be fatal if not treated. My best advice is to take the kittens into your veterinarian as soon as possible for treatment and so a diagnosis can be made. Best of luck to you and I hope for a swift recovery!

If you are concerned that they should be eating more or perhaps about their general well-being, I would highly recommend you consider having them evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. At this point if they are still vomiting you need to take them to the vet urgently, they will need a special food together with some mother's milk and they will need to be treated with antibiotics as well.

Congratulations on adopting your new kittens! I'm glad that you are going to take them in tomorrow morning. They are young and small. You will need to ensure the smaller one is not becoming dehydrated. Kittens their age can have vomiting and diarrhea secondary to intestinal parasites, stress from coming to a new home, or the diet change. The examination can ensure that is not anything more serious though. In the meantime, encourage them to drink plenty of water. You can offer a small amount of food in the morning. Vomiting can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have them evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start them on medications to make them feel better. I recommend to have the kittens examined by the veterinarian with in the next day. Many times these kittens will be played with internal and external parasites. Changes in diet and viral infections are also possible causes. There are a few types of parasites which can be transmitted to humans so it is very important to make sure they are treated appropriately to keep the humans in the household safe. I also recommend to look into a trap neuter release program for the mother cat to help control the population. One female cat can have almost 30 kittens in a year and this can lead to disease outbreaks and sanitation concerns. Best of luck.

I would err on the side of caution and get them seen today if you can, tomorrow, especially if they don't seem better. The vomitus looks like a hairball to me, but it's hard to tell. They may have overeaten, but unless that's something they already do, given the opportunity, I don't see that being as likely as something else, possibly getting into something they shouldn't have. Your vet will do an exam, possibly bloodwork, and maybe more//other diagnostics depending on what they find. Based on these results, your vet will have a better idea of what's going on and be able to recommend a treatment plan if needed.
