Can a pregnant budgie easily fly to her nest box for breeding?

Thanks for reaching out about Elly. Start out with a good nutrition, including a wide variety of vegetables, plant proteins (beans, legumes) and some seeds. A nesting site needs to be provided. For most birds to breed, nutrition must be good, the nest needs to feel safe and a mate needs to be received. Most birds breed in spring, stimulated by lengthening photoperiod. Good luck.

You can try to move the eggs if the nest is beyond repair, however do note that the eggs are EXTREMELY fragile, and are likely to break or crack even with gentle handling. If the nest is still viable enough that she is able to properly lay on the eggs without her or the eggs/hatchling being harmed, then not disturbing it, or disturbing it as little as possible is best.

Feed a good quality pelleted diet (Harrison's, Roudybush, Lafeber, Pretty Bird or Exact) supplemented with a fortified seed mix and fresh greens and vegetables. Provide a cuttlebone or mineral block. Always have fresh water available. Provide an appropriately sized nesting box and suitable nesting material (straw, Aspen shaving, shredded newspaper, etc.).

If your budgies are healthy and there is a nest available, the female will likely lay eggs. They can also lay eggs even if they haven't been bred. if you don't want to raise more babies you can simply remove the eggs as they are laid, or remove the nest itself.

If you are looking to build your own nesting box, there are many websites that will provide information. Use your preferred search engine and search for "DIY budgie nesting box". Boxes are made of plywood and are glued or nailed together. A heater is typically not necessary. You can allow the hen to incubate the eggs until they hatch. Breeders will usually pull the chicks at two weeks of age and handfeed/handraise them from that point until sale. Thanks for your question about your budgies. Your instincts are correct - inbreeding in any species is not advisable as it can lead to defects and potential for a decreased immune system (which will make the birds be more susceptible to getting sick). There is a chance that you may not see any issues, but it is definitely something to be aware of. As far as the stress with multiple nests - I would recommend ensuring that there is plenty of space and food available as this can help decrease any potential conflicts. I hope that helps, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Usually what you will see is behavior changes. Female ringnecks that are ready for breeding will crouch and tilt their heads back to entice males caged near them. When the male is introduced, even interested females can decide to chase the male around the cage and torment him for a short period of time. If the female does not calm down, try moving the pair to a cage neither of them has been in before. This would be neutral territory. Male birds are often injured during attempts of mating. Females are very aggressive toward their mates and can seriously injure them. It is best to supervise them at all times. Have you provided her with a nesting box? Females reach sexual maturity fairly early in life and can be bred as early as 1 year of age. However, this is not recommended. It is best to wait until they are at least 2 years old. I feel that will lessen the probability of egg-binding. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
