Is Farnham blue dressing safe for my chicken's wound or injury?

Hello. So much depends on where the wound is, how deep it is & how easy it is to handle the bird. Some wounds will heal very nicely on their own & it is surprising how quickly they can heal. I have treated & sewn up some of my own hens that survived raccoon attacks, some survive & others that appear less severely injured died. If the bird will allow you to clean the wound, use a skin cleanser like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ). Then, depending on how bad the wound is, you can use a triple antibiotic or even a wound spray like Catron which will also keep the flies off. All you can do is try, especially if there are no veterinarians in your area that will see birds ( call around, you might be surprised to find a vet that likes chickens ). Hi there. So sorry this happened to Floppy. The treatment you are doing so far is great. However, do not use the peroxide anymore. Peroxide is fine to use once after the initial injury but if you keep using it, it will kill all the tissue present in the wound including any new tissue trying to grow in so it will end up delaying healing. You should, from now on, flush the wounds with dilute Betadine or dilute Chlorhexidine solution twice a day as far inside the wound as you can get it. Also, be sure to keep her warm and dry. The SSD is my favorite and I'm glad you are using it. I am unable, by law, to provide any dosing information over the internet so I cannot help you with the Oxytetracycline dose. I can tell you that I have treated quite a few chickens for injuries like this and oxytetracycline is not the first choice for an antibiotic in this situation. I strongly suggest you take her to a vet for an exam. Many small animal hospitals will have a vet that will treat a chicken. If you don't want to do that then just keep doing what you are doing and hopefully she will respond. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Based on the photo you provided, it appears as though Stitch has an abrasion that may be secondarily infected. It does not look very deep based on the photo. If you are unable to get to a veterinarian to have this looked at right away, you can use a diluted solution of betadine and saline (mixed together until you have a light brown liquid) and use this to clean the abrasion of any contaminants. Once clean, you can then use a topical cream such as Sentry Topical Wound cream (applied to the area twice daily until resolved) found at your local Petco. I would also recommend that you use a plastic cone around his head to help prevent him from rubbing his head, which would further worsen the area. If this does not improve or it worsens, I would then recommend having a veterinarian examine Stitch so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Thanks for reaching out about Violet and including a photo. This foot/toe appears fairly swollen. The problem with topical medications is they do not penetrate deeply into wounds, so systemic antibiotics are recommended. If the bird is not placing weight on the foot, a fracture or other damage needs to be considered, where a veterinary visit is recommended. Wounds can be gently treated with warm water and a mild betadyne solution, but still will not penetrate deeply. Good luck.

Although a picture would help to give you more specific advices, generally speaking I would recommend to wait until the lesion is completely resolved before having him groomed and bathed.
