My bird is showing signs of illness. What should I do right now?

I am so sorry to hear about Birdy. I cannot say whether Birdy is going to be okay until her visit, and it sounds like you are very concerned about her. Due to this, I would recommend that you move up your appointment to be seen sooner, or that you consider taking her into an emergency clinic for evaluation. Depending on how stable or unstable she is, your veterinarian may recommend performing blood work to evaluate her systemic health, and radiographs (x-rays). They will also perform a physical exam to see what could be going on with her.

Unfortunately, these symptoms point to illness. A visit to your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet would be recommended. Birds are quite adept at concealing illness, so by the time they are showing symptoms, they are already quite ill. For now, clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Use paper towels on the bottom and change daily. Keep the cage away from strong drafts and keep your budgie warm and as stress free as possible until she sees the doctor.

A veterinary visit needs to be arranged to assist with a diagnostics/treatment plan, as different conditions are treated with different medications/procedures. Thanks for reaching out about Furball. If she is that sick , she needs to visit a veterinarian, ASAP. Small birds have few energy reserves and once start showing illness, illness is significant. Heat support, assisted fluids and food are important, but are not a cure. If there a chance of metal ingestion such as zinc or lead? These considerations are identical to those mention with heavy metal toxiciity. Good luck.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do from home without veterinary care if she is already showing signs of illness. However there are some things that may help make her more comfortable to hopefully make it until your vet appointment. Keeping her in a small hospital cage that is kept warm can help with body temperature regulation. Perches should be low to the ground or removed completely, and soft bedding placed at the bottom of the cage in case she falls. Having food and water (if she is still eating on her own) in shallow dishes she can get in and out of even if weak is best. If she's not eating or drinking, you may need to make a slurry of baby bird food and water and drop feed it to her to help keep her energy up. Otherwise, monitoring her and any changes in her symptoms can help when your vet is able to see her.

Those are all very general signs of illness in a bird. It would be a good idea to get Blue to a vet as soon as possible to try and determine what may be causing his symptoms. Until you can get to your vet, keeping him in a warm hospital cage with low/no perches and food and water that is easy to get in and out of may help.

Tweety bird needs to be seen by an avian veterinarian immediately. These guys are so little that they can decompensate quickly when sick. Vomiting and anorexia in a bird this size can quickly become fatal.
