Is it safe for Alexandrine parrot siblings to breed and have babies?

Thanks for your question about your budgies. Your instincts are correct - inbreeding in any species is not advisable as it can lead to defects and potential for a decreased immune system (which will make the birds be more susceptible to getting sick). There is a chance that you may not see any issues, but it is definitely something to be aware of. As far as the stress with multiple nests - I would recommend ensuring that there is plenty of space and food available as this can help decrease any potential conflicts. I hope that helps, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Thanks for reaching out about your love birds. There is an increased risk of hereditary complications with siblings, as recessive genes can come from both parents, allowing clinical signs to appear. Replacing with dummy eggs might help but will probably continue to lay eggs. Even if separated, the female might be stimulated to lay eggs, although infertile. Health risks of multiple clutches and dietary deficiencies must be addressed. If concerned, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.

A breeding pair should be kept alone unless you have one male with two females. If you have two males, they may fight over the hen. The proper environment, nesting box and diet will be necessary for a successful breeding.

It is not recommended to breed your budgie too soon after having a clutch because this can deplete her calcium reserves. Separating her from the male would be the best way to prevent further breeding. If she has already mated with the male, adding a calcium supplement to her food or water may help her to restore her calcium levels.

It would not be recommended for a brother and sister to mate, since there is a higher risk of genetic problems with such close relatives mating. The kittens from such a mating may be perfectly normal, or they may suffer from birth defects - there is no way to tell until they are born.

You can breed a sister and brother but is is not recommended because this is considered in-breeding and poses the risk of selecting for certain genes that can lead to increased chance of a lot of disease processes and abnormalities.

It's not recommended to try breeding them before the age of one year. I'm not sure which parrots you have, but the vast majority of them the male and female look exactly the same, which means if you or the breeder have not done a DNA test, there is no way to know if you indeed have a female and a male.
