My donkey has a deep cut on its neck. How can I treat it safely?

It is hard to say without seeing a picture of the cut and seeing how bad it is. But in general, you can just about clean any cut with Betadine diluted 50:50 with water to keep it clean until it can be managed by your vet. You should not place any topical ointments on any cut that is more than a superficial wound. I hope that Cappi gets this wound treated for soon! Best wishes and take care.

Superficial wounds around the face are usually treated with topical antibiotics (creams or ointments) or antibiotics tablets. Larger wounds need to be stitched up, but if the would you found is not fresh, most likely your vet would not want to stitch it up. Please, clean the would twice a day with 4% chlorhexidine solution (you can buy it at pharmacies) for a few days and it will hopefully heal up. However, if it starts to bother Aimee or becomes painful you will have to take her to your nearest vets possibly to get a course of antibiotics.

Hello. The cut could use some stitches, but as long as you keep it clean & treated, it should heal just fine. I would clean the wound with a good skin antiseptic like Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) & clean at least twice a day. Then apply your spray. Based on the photo you provided, it appears as though Stitch has an abrasion that may be secondarily infected. It does not look very deep based on the photo. If you are unable to get to a veterinarian to have this looked at right away, you can use a diluted solution of betadine and saline (mixed together until you have a light brown liquid) and use this to clean the abrasion of any contaminants. Once clean, you can then use a topical cream such as Sentry Topical Wound cream (applied to the area twice daily until resolved) found at your local Petco. I would also recommend that you use a plastic cone around his head to help prevent him from rubbing his head, which would further worsen the area. If this does not improve or it worsens, I would then recommend having a veterinarian examine Stitch so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If it is shallow and superficial, then you can treat it at home. I would gently clean his wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

I would recommend clipping and cleaning the area as you can't really see much with all the fur, then apply antibiotic cream on it 2-3 times a day. if it doesn't get any better within 72 hours i would recommend taking her to your vet to get ti treated.

Additionally, bite wounds have a very high likelihood of becoming infected without systemic (oral) antibiotics, so Hazel should be seen by the vet to get started on antibiotics. Hope this helps.
