Reptile Tanks and Terrariums

Reptiles vary dramatically in size and activity level, select a reptile terrarium that fits their specific needs to help keep them happy and healthy. Vertical reptile tanks provide room for exploration and exercise for arboreal, tree-dwelling species who love to climb. Horizontal terrariums provide space for terrestrial, ground-dwelling species who love to crawl or dig. Open air and screen habitats are a great option for reptiles who need extra ventilation such as chameleons.

FAQs About Reptile Tanks and Terrariums

Size requirements will vary according to species, but all habitats should be secure to prevent escape. Ensure that there is space in the terrarium for multiple hides and décor, food and water dishes and space for your pet to exercise and explore.

Vertical habitats are often preferred for arboreal species that spend more time climbing then on the ground. This would include crested geckos, chameleons, most species of tree frogs, and some types of tarantulas. Horizontal setups are preferred by terrestrial species that are more active on the ground instead of climbing high—such as leopard geckos, bearded dragons, ball pythons and scorpions.

Some reptiles require exceptional ventilation that may not be achieved by a screen top alone. Chameleons—among others—do best in a screen type habitat over a glass habitat.
