Selecting the Right Rabbit Cage or Habitat for Your Pet

Rabbit cages come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles, and there are several factors to consider when choosing the right one for your furry friend. Rabbit cages are mostly made of wire, providing great ventilation and plenty of places to hang hay feeders and a water bottle. Since they are so exposed, rabbit cages are made for bunnies that spend the majority of their time indoors and should not be used outdoors.

Why Rabbits Need Cages

Giving your bunny a home of their own keeps them away from household dangers and gives them a space to rest safely. For regular out-of-cage play, rabbit playpens provide an enclosed but large area for your rabbit to explore.

Rabbit Cage Sizing

Rabbit environments should be at least four times the size of the rabbit, with bigger spaces being even better. There should be plenty of room for their bedding, playful hideaway nooks, toys, a food bowl, water bottle, and area to exercise. Some cages even have different levels for your bunny to climb on.

When to Clean Your Rabbit Cage

Plan to clean out your rabbit’s cage once a week to help fight against unwanted odors. You should also replace their bedding and litter every time you clean out the cage, but you may want to change it even more often than once per week.

FAQs About Rabbit Cages & Habitats

The more living space your rabbit has, the better as they love to explore their environment. You’ll need plenty of space for their bedding, playful hideaway nooks, an exercise area and more. This is typically at least four times the size of your rabbit.

Your rabbit habitat should include bedding, water and food bowls, a hideaway, and an area to exercise. Take a look at our rabbit care sheet to learn more about what your rabbit needs.

Rabbits may be kept in mixed-sex pairs if spayed or neutered, or same-sex pairs if they are raised together. Otherwise, keep rabbits housed separately.

Different types of small animals should not be housed together.

While every household is different, we recommend giving your pet rabbit a space to call their own.
