Cat Thyroid Medicine & Hormone Treatment

As your feline ages, they risk hormonal imbalances caused by chronic diseases. Petco carries prescription medication that helps manage hyperthyroidism in cats and Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocorticism). While medicine is never a cure, it does give your feline a chance to have an improved quality of life without undergoing surgery or anesthesia.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism in cats include extreme weight loss, eating more than usual, excessive thirst, increased urination, panting, and diarrhea. If your pet has Addison’s disease you’ll notice they appear lethargic, have no appetite, urinate more often, have a weak pulse, and collapse among other things. The severity of their symptoms only increases as the disease worsens making it vital to see a veterinarian right away. They will test and diagnose your cat to prescribe the right treatment which may include cat thyroid medicine or other hormone treatments.

Hyperthyroidism in Cats and Hormone Treatment

The treatment your pet undergoes will depend on the severity of their symptoms. In the case of hyperthyroidism, your feline’s veterinarian will prescribe cat thyroid medicine, recommend surgical removal of the thyroid gland, or radioactive iodine therapy. While surgery and radioactive iodine therapy are meant to improve cat thyroid problems, hypothyroidism has been seen in felines who receive these forms of treatment. Be sure to consult your veterinarian to ask about all the options available and the risks.

Petco carries three types of prescription medication that treat hormone problems in cats. Learn about each of their uses and how they work:

Felimazole: An antithyroid medication that treats hyperthyroidism in cats. It helps control symptoms by reducing the amount of thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Felimazole tablets come coated to mask the bitter active ingredient, Methimazole, so avoid breaking or crushing the tablet before administration.

Fludrocortisone Acetate: A mineralocorticoid (hormone) that regulates electrolytes and water balance in the body. Pet’s suffering from Addison’s disease or high potassium levels take this medicine to replace low levels of mineralocorticoid hormone, which affects the levels of potassium, sodium, and chloride in the blood. Oral tablets can be given with food to both dogs and cats.

Methimazole: An antithyroid medication that can also be used to protect kidneys in dogs taking cisplatin, an anti-cancer drug. Methimazole for cats treats hyperthyroidism by stopping the thyroid gland from producing too much of the thyroid hormone. It’s available in both a 5 mg and 10 mg tablet for proper dosing.
