Marine Aquarium Substrates

Selecting a substrate can be a personal preference but for a marine aquarium you may want to select one that will help to keep the pH buffered, many aquarists opting for an aragonite sand, Oolite or crushed coral substrate. Substrate is more than just something to cover up the bottom of the tank, marine substrate facilitates surface area for beneficial bacteria growth, burrowing area for sand sifting or dwelling animals and reduces the amount of unhealthy debris in the water. Most marine substrates are "sand color" because they are made from calcium carbonate. Not keen on that sand look and looking for something a little different, there are marine substrates that are white, pink and black in color.
