How to Remove a Tick

If you find a tick, follow these steps to safely and completely remove it:

  1. Look for the tick's body (it'll look like a gray or brown balloon), protruding from your dog.
  2. Using pointed tweezers, hemostats or a tick removal tool, firmly grasp the tick at the head, which is nearest to your dog's skin.
  3. Using steady pressure, pull the tick straight out. Do not use a twisting motion. It may take a few minutes, but with steady pressure, the tic k will disengage from your dog's skin.
  4. Clean the site with mild soap and water or rubbing alcohol.
  5. Apply a hydrocortisone spray or antibiotic ointment to help relieve irritation.
  6. Place the tick in a jar of rubbing alcohol to kill it.
