The Tetra Pond PF Venturi and Trickle Filter System
The water inlet into your Tetra Pond Filter is fitted with an advanced venturi system which sucks air into the inflowing water providing the helpful filter bacteria with the ideal conditions to decompose waste. This combined with the use of "trickle filtration" encourages the prolific growth of helpful bacteria which helps to keep the pond water pollutant-free.
A universal inlet is included as an alternative to the venturi inlet. It should be used if low or excessively high water rates are produced by the pump (which can result in some water leakage through the venturi). Choose the inlet connector according to the outlet size of your pond pump. Remove the smaller sections of the inlet (with a saw if necessary) to avoid unnecessary reduction of the water flow.
Pond Filters and Green Water Problem
The problem of green water in the pond is caused by the presence of millions of tiny cells of algae which feed from nutrients dissolved in the pond water. These algae are so small that they pass straight through the majority of filters and end up back in the pond. To eradicate the problem of green water, use Tetra Pond Aqua Rem to clump the small algae cells together causing them to sink or be removed by the filter foam in your Tetra Pond PF Pond Filter.
For long-term control of green water, use a Tetra Pond UV Clarifier. These high-quality advanced clarifiers kill the suspended algae cells, keeping your pond water crystal clear. The UV Clarifier should be positioned between the pump and your PF Pond Filter.
Using Your Tetra Pond PF Pond Filter
Assembly of the Filter Unit
Before assembly remove all fittings, being careful not to lose any of the component parts or biological filter elements. The filter can now be assembled.
Step One. Filter outlet connection.
Assemble the 1 1/4" diameter overflow pipe, ensuring the rubber washers are placed on the outside of the filter casing and the screw fittings are hand tight.
Step Two. Adding biological filter media.
Add the plastic biological filter media, ensuring it is evenly distributed.
Step Three. Adding filter foam.
Add the filter foam, ensuring the carbon impregnated foam (black) is below the coarse foam (blue).
Step Four. Filter inlet connection
Select the venturi or universal water inlet fitting which is compatible with the diameter of your pond pump outflow. Assemble the inlet and spray bar ensuring the rubber washers are placed on each side of the filter casing and the screw fittings are hand tight. Your Tetra Pond PF Pond Filter can also be used to provide water for a waterfall. Ensure that the bottom of the filter is above the top of the waterfall.
Step Five. Secure the lid.
Screw on and secure the lid.
Step Six. Positioning your pond filter.
The design of the water outlet of the Tetra Pond PF Pond Filter allows you to place the unit at any distance from the pond. Simply attach the required lengths of 1 1/4" diameter flexible piping to the water outlet ensuring the end of the pipe projects over the edge of the pond. This allows you to hide the filter so that it does not spoil the appearance of your pond.
Step Seven. Operating your Tetra Pond PF Pond Filter
Connect the venturi or universal water inlet to your pond pump using a suitable length of flexible hose. Two sizes of water inlet are supplied, 3/4" and 1", which makes the filter compatible with most makes of pond pump. Ensure that the pond pump used with the Tetra Pond PF Pond Filter has a pre-filter unit on its intake side to prevent large items of debris being fed through the pipework and filter unit.
The filter is now ready for operation.
Running Your Filter In
A biological filter such as the Tetra Pond PF Pond Filter has to undergo a period of maturation before it is fully efficient. During this period of time helpful filter bacteria grow on the biological filter elements until the population is large enough to purify all the waste generated by the fish in the pond. This initial maturation of the filter takes approximately four to six weeks. To avoid dangerous levels of pollutants during this time, gradually introduce your pond fish and take great care to avoid overfeeding. Raised levels of dangerous ammonia and nitrite can be identified through regular use of Tetra Pond Test Kits.
The Tetra Pond PF Pond Filter should be run 24 hours a day during its period of operation on the pond.
Maintenance and care of your Tetra Pond PF Pond Filter
During operation debris sieved from the water will collect on the filter foams and if they are not regularly cleaned, the efficiency of the filter may decline. To clean each foam simply rinse it in a bucket of pond water.
The period between each clean is dependent on many factors such as the number of fish present in the pond. However, as a guide each foam should be cleaned at 14-day intervals or more often if necessary. If debris collects within the biological filter media it should be rinsed out using pond water only. Tap water should not be used to clean the biological filter media as the chlorine it contains will kill the helpful bacteria.
Check the filter spray bar at regular intervals for possible blockages. If the spray bar becomes blocked, water will leak through the venturi. Rubbing your hand along the underside of the spray bar will dislodge any trapped debris.
When cleaning the outside of the filter use freshwater only. Do not use cleaning agents.
