Mechanical filtration--traps suspended solid waste and dirt particles. Each Emperor Cartridge has a huge 44 square inch surface area polyfiber pad for primary mechanical filtration. Chemical filtration--adsorbs many harmful pollutants which discolor aquarium water and cause foul odors. Each cartridge contains two ounces of Black Diamond Activated Carbon--the best available. Up to eight ounces of additional carbon or chemical filter media of your choice can be added with Emperor's Media Container. The Emperor Filter Cartridge evenly distributes the carbon vertically for maximum water contact--no bypass as with filter bags. Just shake, rinse, and install. It's best to replace disposable cartridges at least monthly or as soon as they become clogged and/or activated carbon is no longer effective.
