Perky-Pet suggests you try the following: Black oil sunflower seeds are the most popular seed for wild birds. They are easily dispensed in a variety of feeders. White Proso Millet is the favorite of many sparrow species and mourning doves. Common mixed grains which include milo, wheat, cracked corn, oats, flax, canola and canary seed are often mixed with sunflower and millet to produce a blend that is generally labeled "Wild Bird Seed". Care should be taken to select a blend with adequate nutrient levels. Thistle seed is a favorite feed of goldfinches and pine siskins. This type of seed is dispensed by specially designed feeders with small feeder ports. Consistency is the most important aspect of bird feeding. Once you have put out a feeder, your feathered friends will soon rely on you as a favorite source. Don't let them down. Keep your feeder filled! Summer feeding is an exciting adventure and is not harmful to a bird's feeding habits. In addition, summer feeding can attract additional varieties of birds and their young, often displaying an array of colorful seasonal plumage. Initial placement is important. Start by placing your feeder near where you have observed wild bird activity. Gradually you can move your feeder and successfully draw the birds to a desired location. Feeders should be cleaned on a regular basis to remove accumulated dirt, hulls and other matter to protect your birds from avian diseases.
