Feeder Preparation: We suggest you wash the feeder bottle and base. After cleaning, fill the feeder with mixed nectar, screw on the base and quickly flip the unit over. Guide the hanging wire through the cap and hang from a point that can support the weight of the feeder. At first, hang the feeder near pine trees, flowers or shrubbery. Once birds are using your feeder, you can gradually move it closer to your house, deck or other viewing location. Cleaning: The feeder should be cleaned at least twice a week. Normally, warm water only is required to clean all parts. A diluted vinegar solution can be used if additional cleaning is required. Do not use a dishwasher! Ants: If ants are attracted, use the Ant Guard available from Perky-Pet. Nectar Preparation: For best results use Perky-Pet Instant Nectar. If Instant Nectar is not available, a solution of one part sugar to four parts water may be used. Boil and stir until sugar dissolves completely. Thoroughly wash your feeder between fillings. Keep your feeder filled! Hummingbirds may not return to a feeder they have found empty. When to take your feeder down for the season: It is important to the welfare of hummingbirds to keep nectar in feeders until at least one week after the last hummer has been seen feeding. This will not disturb the bird's natural migratory pattern. Warning: Do not use saccharin or any artificial sweeteners. These products have no nutritional value for hummingbirds and could harm them. Do not use honey or other related products as they can also be harmful or even fatal.
