Sure, they’re called “flies”, but the great thing is – they can’t fly! You can keep tubes of these great little flies without any escapees buzzing around! A wide variety of reptiles, fish and amphibians require smaller prey – you can give them just what they need with our flightless fruit flies. We offer two sizes: D. Melanogaster which are about the size of a pinhead cricket, approximately 1/16”, and D. Hydei which are a little larger, at 1/8” in size. Both varieties are shipped in a four vial pack with approximately 50 to 100 flies per vial, and each vial will continue to produce flies for up to six weeks! Your fruit flies can be stored in the vials they’re shipped in. All you have to do is remove the plastic cap to improve air flow into the vial. The foam plugs can be easily removed and replaced when you dispense flies into your pet’s habitat. Keep the fly vials at or near room temperature (70°F). Although temperature is not critical, cool temperatures will slow fly production, and warm temperatures may result in bacteria or mold growth in the medium. A note on reproduction: keep at least half of the flies in the vial for two days after receiving them to allow for reproduction. In most cases, several generations of flies will be produced over the five to six weeks that the medium will last. At room temperature, D. Melanogaster will complete its entire life cycle in 12 to 15 days, and D. Hydei will complete its life cycle in about 25 days.
