Innotek Free Spirit 2-Dog Basic Trainer

Train two dogs from one unit with the 2-Dog Basic Trainer. This system features an easy to use transmitter with tone/no tone stimulation at four levels that can be customized to each dog and a 150 yard range.

This Free Spirit by Innotek electronic dog collar is among the safest, most humane and effective training products you can buy. Used properly, the collar's electronic stimulus serves as a distraction that your dog will find undesirable. By obeying, your dog quickly learns to shut off the stimulus, thus gaining confidence in response to your commands. Like most Innotek training products, this collar has adjustable stimulation levels. This feature allows you to use the level that best matches your dog's temperament.

The hand-held transmitter features four preset levels of stimulation with a tone/no tone option. Stimulation continues for as long as you hold the button, up to ten seconds. To prevent over-correction, there is a ten second lockout. The water-resistant transmitter has a large, easy to read keypad with color coded buttons that correspond to the dog's collars, making it easy to deliver the stimulation to the correct dog.

Transmitter operates off one of 2,048 random ID codes that allow it to communicate only with the receivers. In the unlikely event the ID code interferes with another system operating nearby, you can select another random ID code.

The color-coded training collars feature fray-resistant nylon straps with a reflective band that securely carry the receivers. The water-resistant receiver boxes have internal antennae, low battery indicators, and house the probes which deliver the stimulation. Two sets of probes are provided so you can use the collars with dogs of varying coat thickness.

Kit includes:

  • transmitter
  • 2 training collars with receiver boxes
  • collar probes
  • 12-volt alkaline battery for the transmitter
  • 6-volt alkaline batteries for the collar receivers
  • test light
  • lanyard for transmitter
  • instructional video

Caution
Please take a few minutes to read the instruction manual prior to your first use and retain the manual for future reference. This instruction manual contains important programming and set-up information to help your training proceed as successfully as possible. For best results, follow these important safeguards:

  • Obey all warnings contained in the manual.
  • The electronic dog collar is intended only for use on dogs. Never attempt to use this product for any purpose not specifically described in the manual.
  • Most dog owners are surprised at how much can be accomplished by using low-level stimulation, therefore use the lowest stimulation necessary to get the desired behavior.
  • If you have any reason to believe that your dog may pose a danger to others, harm itself, or would react adversely after receiving stimulations from this training system, you should not rely solely on this product to train your dog.
  • A low battery may cause intermittent operation. Do not use if you suspect a low battery.
  • Allow your dog to get used to the collar before you begin training. You want your dog to accept the collar as part of a routine, not to associate the collar with correction.
  • Do not leave the collar on your dog for more than 12 hours.
  • Never perform set-up procedures when the collar is on your dog.
  • An electronic collar should only be used under close supervision by the dog's owner.
  • Monitor the system periodically to ensure that the unit is operating properly and is producing a signal.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Your dog will not respond to the BT-502-A Training System unless:
    • You train your dog and utilize the Training Tips section of the manual.
    • The collars and transmitter contain working batteries.
    • The collar receiver is synchronized to receive the messages from the hand-held transmitter.
    • The BT-502A collar is worn properly by the dog.
    • The BT-502A collar is adjusted so that the probes are touching your dog's skin.

    Training Tips
When you begin your training using the remote trainer, keep in mind these tips:

    1. The collar must be on relatively tight to keep the probes making skin contact without restricting breathing. You should be able to slide only one finger under the strap at the back of the dog's neck.
    2. You'll know when you have found the proper stimulation level when your dog responds to the stimulation with only a mild twitch of the neck, shoulder, head, or perk of the ears. If the dog cries out upon receiving the stimulation, you need to go to a less intense level. The dog should never cry out when the hand-held transmitter is set at the proper stimulation level.
    3. Never leave the collar receiver on the dog for longer than 12 hours a day. Leaving the collar on the dog for extended periods could result in skin irritation.
    4. Never use an electronic collar on a dog under six months of age.
    5. Check the tightness of the probes frequently to prevent loss of the receiver box.
    6. Other metal collars should be removed from the dog when it wears the training collar. They may interfere with proper operation.
    7. Use conventional training methods to teach your dog basic commands. Wait until the dog understands your commands before introducing the collar as a reinforcement tool.
    8. Always make sure the collar is functioning properly before putting it on the dog. If you receive a red light on the hand-held transmitter when you press a button, it is time to replace the 12-volt alkaline battery in the hand-held transmitter.
    9. Always use the lowest stimulation level when beginning training. Proceed to higher stimulation levels only if necessary.
    10. Keep training sessions brief, about ten minutes. After a 30-minute rest period, repeat the training process. Dogs acquire habits through repetition, not necessarily through duration.
    11. Never continue a session after the dog has lost interest. Take a break to rest or play.
    12. Have the dog wear the collar for a few hours each day for a week or two before using it for training.
    13. The goal of training is to condition your dog to respond to your verbal commands regardless of whether it is wearing a training collar. Put the collar on the dog at least 30 minutes before beginning a training session. This can help prevent the dog from becoming collar-wise (obeying commands only when wearing the training collar). Once you have started a program with your electronic remote trainer, never start a training session without it. You should plan on using the collar for at least four months. A good rule is never take the dog out without the collar on. This will ensure that the dog is imprinted only with the correct response to your commands, and that you always have complete control.
    14. Always end each session on a positive note. Have the dog repeat a mastered task. This will keep the dog's interest for the next training session.
    15. Most important, always praise your dog for good behavior!
Read all instructions before using product. If you have any questions or concerns after reading the information, contact Innotek at 1-800-826-5527.

Transmitter Set-Up and Programming: The collar receiver will respond to signals from the hand-held transmitter. This hand-held transmitter is capable of controlling both collars and delivering four levels of correction with one of three tone options. When you first set up the handheld transmitter, you must insert the supplied 12-volt alkaline battery in the battery compartment of the transmitter. You can expect this battery to last up to three months depending on your use. When it's necessary to replace the battery, use only a 12-volt alkaline battery.

Setting the ID Code: To set-up hand-held transmitter, you must select an ID Code to prevent interference from other systems that may be operating nearby. The BT-502A does this by randomly choosing one of 2,048 passwords that allows your hand-held transmitter to communicate only with your collar receiver[s]. It's highly unlikely that another system in your vicinity will have the same password. To set a random ID Code, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the PROGRAM button on the back of the hand-held transmitter.
  2. While holding the PROGRAM button, press and hold BUTTON 1 in the DOG 1 column on the front of the hand-held transmitter.
  3. Release only the PROGRAM button and continue to hold BUTTON 1. The light on the hand-held transmitter will blink alternately red and green lights.
  4. When the light stops blinking red and green, release BUTTON 1. The system automatically assigns one of 2,048 ID Codes to the DOG 1 column of the handheld transmitter and a different ID Code to the DOG 2 column. If you're training only one dog, you won't be using this column of buttons.
  5. Follow steps one through four on DOG 2 side of the transmitter to program the tone option for DOG 2.
If the light on the hand-held transmitter flashed red five times during the above procedure, it means that you didn't hold one or more of the buttons long enough. Please repeat the above instructions and hold each button a bit longer.

Selecting a Tone Option: Three tone options are available from the hand-held transmitter: Tone, No Tone, and Tone with One-Second Delay. The Tone option delivers a tone from the collar receiver at the same time the stimulation is delivered. The No-Tone option delivers only the stimulation. The Tone with One-Second Delay option delivers a tone from the collar receiver for one second before the stimulation is delivered. Some trainers like to use Tone or Tone with Delay when training their dogs. They feel that with this method, the dog will eventually associate the tone with obedience, which may make stimulation unnecessary. To learn more about training methods, consult your veterinarian or other qualified canine professional. To program tone options for DOG 1 side, please follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the PROGRAM button on the back of the hand-held transmitter.
  2. While holding the PROGRAM button, press and hold one of the following buttons to make your tone option selection:
    • BUTTON 2 = Tone option
    • BUTTON 3 = No-Tone option
    • BUTTON 4 = Tone with One-Second Delay option
  3. Release only the PROGRAM button while continuing to hold the selected tone option button.
  4. When the light on the hand-held transmitter goes out, release the selected tone option button.

Setting Up the Collar Receivers: Set up the collar receivers by inserting a supplied 6-volt alkaline battery in the battery compartment of each collar. When it is necessary to change a collar receiver battery, always use a 6-volt alkaline model. Whenever you have replaced a battery in a collar receiver, the collar receiver must be matched to the hand-held transmitter before the collar can be used. Don't put the collar on the dog until the hand-held transmitter has been programmed and the collar receiver has been matched to it.

Matching the Components: After the programming of the hand-held transmitter is complete, it must be matched to the collar receiver. This allows the signal and information from the hand-held transmitter to be received by the collar receiver. Please follow these steps to match the two components:

  1. Hold the red paper dot of the collar receiver to the red paper dot of the hand-held transmitter for five to eight seconds. The light on the collar receiver will first be solid, then go out, and come back on solid yellow. It's important that you see the solid yellow light before proceeding.
  2. When the solid yellow light appears on the collar receiver, separate the two components about one foot. The light on the collar receiver will blink yellow.
  3. Press and hold BUTTON 1 under DOG 1 for approximately three seconds. The light on the collar receiver will pulsate red to indicate that the signal from the buttons in the DOG 1 column of the hand-held transmitter will activate this collar receiver.
  4. If a second collar is to be used, repeat steps 1 and 2 above. Press and hold BUTTON 1 in the DOG 2 column for approximately three seconds. The light on the collar receiver will pulsate red to indicate that the signal from the buttons in the DOG 2 column of the hand-held transmitter will activate the second collar receiver.

Important Note About Testing System
Before putting the collar receiver on your dog, manually test the system using the supplied test light. To manually test the system, position the test light on the probes so that the tips of the probes make contact with the wires inside the two openings. Gentle pressure may be needed. Press one of the stimulation buttons on the hand-held transmitter, and the lamp should light. The light will be dim for mild stimulation and bright for intense stimulation. Only when certain the collar is responding properly to the signals from the transmitter, should you proceed with fitting the collar to your dog.

Turning the Collar On and Off: The collar's ON/OFF switch is indicated by the red paper dot on the side of the receiver. It is activated by the transmitter's magnet, also indicated by a red paper dot. To turn the collar on, briefly touch the transmitter's red paper dot against the red paper dot on the collar receiver. A flashing green light on the collar receiver verifies the collar is on and ready for use. To turn the collar off, touch the transmitter's red paper dot against the red paper dot on the collar receiver. A brief, sold red light and tone followed by no light on the collar receiver verifies the collar has been turned off.

Using the Hand-Held Transmitter: The hand-held transmitter has four preset levels of correction. BUTTON 1 delivers the mildest stimulation; BUTTON 4 delivers the most intense stimulation. The stimulation will continue as long as you press the button, up to a maximum of ten seconds. After ten seconds, the collar will lock out any further stimulations for a period of ten seconds. This is a safety feature that prevents over-correcting the dog. Once the lock-out period ends, the stimulation button must be released and pressed again to correct the dog. A green pulsating light on the hand-held transmitter when any button is pressed indicates that the transmitter is sending a signal to the collar receiver. A red pulsating light on the hand-held transmitter when any button is pressed indicates that the 12-volt alkaline battery is low and should be replaced.
