Facts About Blades and Cutting
- Blades not only become dull from cutting hair, they are dulled by the abrasive particles on the hair, dirt, sand, etc.
- Blades will not cut if abrasive particles are picked-up and carried by the oil film between the blades. These particles tend to hold the blades apart and cause chewing and pulling instead of clean cutting.
- Oiling the blades performs two distinct functions:
- Provides a low friction, very thin lubricant film between the cutting blades so that they can take a full cutting stroke without becoming hot from friction.
- Flushes abrasive particles and hair out from between the blades.
Note: If you cut into dirt, immediately wash with Wahl H-42 or oil to flush it out. Working the blade adjustment lever back and forth will assist in removing the dirt particles. Periodically dip the teeth in a shallow pan of Wahl Clipper Oil (with clipper running) to flush out dirt and hair.
While not intended as a comprehensive grooming guide, the manual provides basic information for safe operation and care of your clipper kit, as well as general grooming guidelines for some of the more commonly clipped animals. Please read it carefully before operating the clipper.Cord
The cord should not be used to pull the clipper. Since freedom of movement needs to be maintained, care should be used to keep the cord untwisted and unobstructed. When stored, the cord should be coiled and the unit placed in original box or storage pouch (if provided).
If your clipper has a polarized plug: To reduce the risk of electric shock, this appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug fits in a polarized outlet only one way. In the event the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. In the event it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way.
How To Operate Your Wahl Clipper
By following these simple steps, your Wahl Animal Clipper will provide years of satisfactory service.
- Do not attempt to operate this clipper before oiling blades. Place a few drops of oil between the blades. Do not use heavy oil, grease, or any oil mixed with kerosene or any solvent, as the solvent will evaporate and leave a thick gummy oil to slow down the efficiency of the clipper. Use only Wahl Clipper Oil.
- Resharpening Blades: Do not try to sharpen the clipper blades. Once they have become dull, special equipment is needed to sharpen these blades. Never wash the blades in water. When the blades do not cut, they may be dull or need oil For resharpening, return the blades only to Wahl Clipper Corporation.
- Removing Blades: To remove cutting blades for sharpening or replacement, loosen and remove two screws on bottom blade. Replace same and retighten.
- Aligning Blades on Direct Drive Rotary Motor Driven Clippers: The blades on rotary motor, gear driven clippers are for the most part self-aligning. However, for the most precise, consistent clipping, observe the following:
- Bottom blade holes are larger than shanks of blade screws. When blade screws are loosened, the bottom blade can be aligned with the top blade. Tighten the screws securely after the blade has been aligned.
- For top blade alignment, end of the top blade should be 1/32" back from the bottom blade. Tighten the screws after the blade has been aligned.
Using the Blade Lever
The blade lever on the side of your clipper has two functions:
- The blade lever adjusts the cutting depth of the blade. This provides increased cutting variations with fewer blades. In the uppermost position, the cut is very close, and becomes gradually longer as the lever is moved downward.
- The blade lever is used to remove trapped hair between blades. If your clipper stops cutting suddenly, it may be because of trapped hair between the top and bottom blades, causing them to separate and not cut. By moving the blade lever back and forth several times you can remove most of the hair. Then re-oil and continue cutting.
Blade Selection
The Wahl 1037-400 Satin Chrome blade set, standard on the Kennel Pro, ShowCut Professional, and Model #8886 Stable Pro is the best all around blade set, enabling a cutting range equal to a #30, #15, and #10 without changing blades. Using this blade alone, you may clip the hair anywhere from 1/32" to 1/8" in length.
The Model #8888 Stable Pro comes standard with Wahl's #1037-600 2 1/2" Extra Wide blade set. The 1037-600 has the same #30-#15-#10 cutting range as the standard blade set, however, the width of these blades allow for increased cutting efficiency when full body clipping, or when performing extended clipping over any large areas.
Also provided in the ShowCut Professional Kit are the 1037-600 2 1/2" Extra Wide blade set, and the 1038-100 Blocking blade set. The 1038-100 is a coarser blade set that adjusts from a size #9 to size #8 (1/16" to 1/8"), making it the preferred blade set for cattle blocking. Your clipper is also compatible with other Wahl blade sets which can be purchased separately. The Blade Selection Guide (included in instruction manual) illustrates the cutting range of Wahl blade sets according to accepted industry standards.
Using Attachment Combs
Included in the Kennel Pro and ShowCut Professional clipper kits are the #1, #3, and #5 stainless steel attachment combs. These attachments enable you to increase the cutting range of any Wahl blade set in 1/8" increments, allowing for a longer cut without the purchase of additional blade sets. Also, the combs are available in the standard nine teeth configuration, or a five teeth configuration which performs the function of the skip tooth blade design, for better feeding through matted hair.
Note: These attachment combs are not compatible with the Model 1037-600 extra wide blade set. The Steel Attachment Comb Guide (included in instruction manual) illustrates the number of teeth and additional cutting length achieved with each comb.
Installing Attachment Combs
- Shut off the clipper and put blade in the fine position.
- Holding attachment comb in hand, snap the side spring clips onto the bottom blade.
- Slide attachment comb into place.
- Be sure attachment comb is correctly installed before operating clipper.
Note: The blade can be severely damaged if the attachment comb is allowed to enter the operating teeth. To Remove Attachment Combs
- Shut clipper off and slide attachment comb forward.
- Pivot attachment comb away from teeth and off.
