Aragonite Elemental Assay:
General Use: For best results, use at least 1 pound of Arag-Alive per gallon of seawater. For deep sand beds, use 2 pounds per gallon. Do not rinse. Arag-Alive may also be used to seed CaribSea's dry aragonite products. Arag-Alive compresses new tank cycle time and suppresses initial ammonia spike. Live rocks and most invertebrates may be placed in aquarium immediately. However, gradually introduce fish within the first 3 weeks and do not exceed 1 inch of fish per 5 gallons of water during this time.
Berlin Systems: The most suitable substrates are Arag-Alive Fiji Pink, Arag-Alive West Caribbean Reef, Arag-Alive Bahamas Oolite or Arag-Alive Indo Pacific Black. Use 1 pound per gallon. Place live rock on top covering the least amount of sand as possible. Use small reef friendly hermit crabs, shrimp, serpent stars, sea cucumbers and other benthic animals to avoid detrius accumulation.
Plenum Systems: After placing plenum plate in position, add 2 pounds per gallon of Arag-Alive Special Grade Reef Sand or a split layer of Arag-Alive Florida Crushed Coral at 1 pound per gallon for the bottom layer and then a top layer at 1 pound per gallon of Arag-Alive Special Grade Reef Sand for the top layer. In both cases, a screen should be placed either between the upper and lower layer, or about mid level to discourage sea life from burrowing down to the plenum plate and disrupting plenum function.
Sumps, Refugiums and Deep Nitrate Reduction Beds (DNR): For offline systems, such as sumps and binary systems, the deepest bed possible is suggested for the non display unit. Use Arag-Alive Florida Crushed Coral or Arag-Alive Special Grade Reef Sand and/or corresponding CaribSea Dry Aragonite. Plant Macro-Algaes such Caluerpa Sp and illuminate on a counter daylight cycle to the display tank or for 24 hours. When illuminated, these Macro-Algaes help control pH by absorbing carbon dioxide while releasing surplus oxygen. They also help control nuisance algae in the display aquarium by absorbing excess nutrients. These type sumps and binary systems are especially effective in maintaining good water chemistry in display aquariums larger than 75 gallons. For deep nitrate reduction beds in display aquariums use Arag-Alive Special Grade Reef Sand, Arag-Alive Fiji Pink, Arag-Alive West Caribbean Reef, Arag-Alive Bahamas Oolite or Arag-Alive Indo Pacific Black. Add substrate to a depth of 3 to 5 inches (2 to 3 pounds per gallon). Place base or live rock so as to cover the least amount of the substrate as possible. It is especially desireable to incorporate burrowing and sand sifting fish and invertebrates for optimum health of these systems.
Pacific Fringing Reef Ecosystem: Use Indo Pacific Black to re-create ecosystems prevalent in much of the Pacific and Indo Pacific region where dramatic black volcanic basalt meets tropical fringing coral reef environments such as the Indonesian Archipelago (including Java, Bali, Sulawesi and Sumatra), the Hawaiian Island Chain, the Japanese Archipelago and the Pacific Coast of Central America.
Jawfish Ecosystem: This system is optimum for Jawfish, Gobies, Burrowing Eels and larger burrowing invertebrates. Beginning with a bare aquarium (tall geometry is best), place a latticework of medium size coral skeletal fragments or rocks on the bare bottom. Using Arag-Alive West Caribbean Reef, fill in and around the lattice to a depth of 3 to 5 inches (2 to 3 pounds per gallon) to create a sub-surface architecture. Most burrowing sea creatures will excavate extensive sub-surface burrows and chambers utilizing these buried features. This is an excellent inducement for breeding behavior in Jawfish.
Stingrays, Sharks and Other Soft Bellied Bottom Dwellers: Use Arag-Alive Bahamas Oolite at one pound per gallon or more. Due to the natural sphericity of the individual grains. Oolite is favored by public aquariums and research institutions for use in their systems harboring Rays, Skates, Sharks and other bottom dwelling fish and invertebrates.
Warning: Placing new substrate over the top of an established substrate bed can be damaging to aquatic life. Getly mix new material into existing bed with fingers. For added safety, this process can be done in sections, over the course of a few days.
