Savannah Monitor

This most commonly owned pet Monitor Lizard is known for its prehistoric looks and puppy dog-like personaility. However, that docile tempermant comes from consistent interaction and bonding with their pet parent(s). They are also a popular choice because they stay much smaller than other Monitor Lizards, reaching only 2.5 to 3 feet in total length, which makes them and the space they require much more managable.

Savannah Monitors can be kept in a 20-gallon or 40-gallon terrariums as juveniles, but they will eventually grow out of those and require larger housing. Their diet should be varied between a wide variety of insects and frozen/thawed rodents. Savannah Monitors love to soak in water and are also big drinkers, so be sure to provide a water bowl large enough for them to soak in. Remember that regular interaction with juveniles make for social and well-mannered adults.
