Garter Snake
Garter Snakes have long been a popular pet snake, as they are relatively inexpensive and stay smaller than some other types of snakes such as boas or pythons. Garter Snakes are very quick and very active, which makes them slightly difficult to handle, but they can be tamed to be held. They enjoy a large water dish for soaking and also for hunting their next meal, a fish. These snakes can be kept together, but consider their adult size before buying multiple. They will need ample space for activity as they grow.
Feeding tip: It is always recommended to feed snakes in a container outside of their habitat. This is the best way to help limit any feeding responses from being associated with the habitat. This will also keep any substrate from being ingested while eating. A secure, small plastic container is most commonly used. By keeping this container dark you help ease stress from being moved from their habitat.
