Crested Geckos are members of the rhacodactylus genus of geckos that until 1994 were believed to be extinct. Due to their prolific nature, they have become available as pets in the last 15 years. Their ease of care, unique look and velvety soft skin has made them a popular pet! They are happily kept in a 20-gallon terrarium with plenty of plants and leaves to hide in. A pair can also be kept in the same size habitat, but males will fight so they should not be kept together. Temperatures can be maintained with an unde- tank heater and/or incandescent bulb. Mist their habitat daily to provide moisture for them to drink as well as to keep considerable humidity levels. A water bowl should also be provided in the habitat. Their diet is quite simple since the commercial powder diet was developed and is simply mixed with water. Occasional crickets and baby foods are also okay. If using baby food, it is recommended that it be mixed with the diet. Crested Geckos are available in a variety of color morphs, a wide variety of which are offered in Petco stores for one great price!
Tail Loss: This can occur for a number of reasons however, calcium deficiency is the most common. This can also occur due to stress, aggression or other type of injury. This can also occur accidentally as a feeding response. Housing males together will also be a likely cause.
