Ball Python
Ball Pythons are a great choice for someone looking for a snake because they stay much smaller than other Pythons. They are also the most docile. Ball Pythons all have their own unique patterns and you know that no one will ever have a snake that looks exactly like yours! A 20L habitat is appropriate for one ball python, though providing a larger habitat is perfectly acceptable. In their natural habitat, they are often found in underground burrows so at least one secure hiding spot is required. Providing damp moss in this hiding spot is also not a bad option for providing some humidity. Include a water dish large enough for the snake to soak. As with most snakes, feeding once a week is recommended, especially as juveniles. Ball Pythons have increased in popularity in recent years as different color morphs have become available. Most commonly available are pastel, spider and pinstripe morphs as pictured to the right. Others are available, but in much more limited quantities.
Feeding tip: It is always recommended to feed snakes in a container outside of their habitat. This is the best way to help limit any feeding responses from being associated with the habitat. This will also keep any substrate from being ingested while eating. A secure, small plastic container is most commonly used. By keeping this container dark you help ease stress from being moved from their habitat.
