Rabbitfish are known for their algae eating capabilities even consuming some nuisance algae like hair and valonia. The Masked Rabbitfish, also known as the Masked Spinefoot or Decorated Rabbitfish are generally a peaceful species except towards other rabbitfish. Considered reef safe but if not well fed they can nip and consume various soft and large polyp stony corals. Plenty of hiding places should be provided.
Masked Rabbitfish - Special Care Info
The spines on the dorsal and anal fins of the Masked Rabbitfish are venomous and caution is a must when handling. The likelihood of a sting is a very uncommon event, but should not be taken lightly. Although the venom is stronger than a bee sting, every person reacts differently to the venom. The sting can be treated by soaking the injured area in hot water, somewhere around 100° F or as hot as possible for a duration of 15 to 20 minutes. This will denature the proteins in the toxins preventing spreading into the bloodstream. Be sure to remove any broken spines if necessary. It is highly recommended to get medical treatment even after soaking the affected area.
