Also known as a White Spotted Puffer, Kalavo ni vutia (Fiji), Botiti (Philippines), White Spotted Blowfish, Makimaki (Hawaii), Sazanamifugu (Japan), or Botete pintado (Mexico).
The Stars and Stripes Puffer gets its name from the patterns on its body. Due to its odd configuration of fins, the Stars and Stripes Puffer floats through the water just like a helicopter. This fish is benthopelagic, meaning it lives and swims near the bottom as well as the middle of a body of water. Found in estuaries, coastal bays, and lagoons in the wild.
Also, this fish uses its beak to crush its food, and is a very active eater. Not reef safe as it will eat mollusks, corals, sponges, tube worms, some anemones, crabs and echinoderms.
This species is great with bolder fish such as triggers, groupers, and wrasses.
These fish puff up as a defense and are poisonous if the flesh is eaten. However, puffing up is a very stressful action and should not be induced.
